2013-03-30 00:16:00 | Chill already knows a bit about this setup, basically serving 10-15 people in our flat off a shared connection (managed with a T1043 + gargoyle) ISP is Snap. When we moved in I'm fairly certain we were getting a good 8mbps+ and hitting the standard 1mbps upstream limit. Recently (whilst setting up the QoS rules) I check the speed via speedtest again and only managed to just hit 4mbps, no activity on the router either (blocked all leases from accessing the internet to get an accurate speed test for the line capacity). I thought it might just be a one off congestion thing, but I have tried testing throughout the week at different times and the speed test is almost always the same, 4.x mbps, the funny thing is I noticed that the upload never goes over .5 mbps either. It seems strange, but it's as if our connection speed has been cut exactly in half. Looking at the line stats... 4889 ...the connection looks "about right" for our original speed of 8mbps by 1mbps, so what's gone wrong? I'm guessing this is a job for the ISP to come sort out, but looking at those figures is there anything I can do on my end? Just out of curiosity I tried to connect using annex M which failed :p. I know what chill will say, "get the damn draytech already! it's worth the money" unfortunately my studently wallet say nope. Not unless I *have* to :D Cheers, TEG

2013-03-30 01:22:00 | You'll never achieve the connection speed in downloads or speed tests but you should be able to get in the ballpark during quiet periods. I connect at 16Mbps and my best speed test results are in the 12-14Mbps range. Unfortunately if it's significantly lower it's usually an indicator of congestion issues or throttling from your ISP and not something you can do much about other than complain to your ISP and hope they can sort it. What happens over time particularly with cabinets and even more so in newer areas is that the amount of customers steadily increases so speeds decrease as this happens because you are all sharing the same capacity back into the net. Sometimes there is no easy solution, sometimes there is.

2013-03-30 02:15:00 | ISP is Snap. Well if I'm reading it right the sync speed is looking at around 10mbps so I would except something around 6-8mbps. If I recall correctly we might have been getting a speed test higher that 8mbps but that's midly irrelevant now. I wasn't expecting to be getting anywhere particularly close to the sync rate, that just doesn't happen. Since it's Easter most of the people in our apt block have gone home and I haven't seen even a +200kbps rise on the speed tests, that looks to me as if Chorus have buggered around in the cabinet (possibly to accommodate the 100 or so connections from us + the rest of the street) I haven't actually been around much, or rather, haven't been using our internet so I really didn't notice the change in speed. I just talked to a few people who have said it's been really poor. esp in the evenings when everyone gets home. The good thing is since most people are away I can (hopefully) sort it out without too much of a disruption to them. The annoying this is, it's easter so I'll have to deal with getting through to snap and snap getting through to chorus whilst there's no one around. Yay life. Personally I think it's absolutely stupid they haven't got fibre provisioned here. It's a damn university hostel and the fibre is even on our side of the street. Would save a lot of issues with over crowding of the local cabinet as well. Random side note - today's speedtests have all got me doing a ping of 7-15ms to wellington AND Auckland.... seems a bit too fast to correct? Esp over DSL?

2013-03-30 05:07:00 | Nope that's attainable if interleaving is turned off, quite easily. I'd swap out the router, then point the finger to your ISP.

2013-03-30 05:36:00 | Hmm, just seemed strange since when we were with orcon ADSL (getting 16mbps) our minimum ping was 40ms, most ADSL connections seem around ~50ms, when I was doing my first speed tests here it was around 20-30ms. I've never seen an ADSL ping as low as that. I would have thought interleaving would be on by default, I never requested it off. I'll try swap out the router temporarily. If that improves anything I'll bite the bullet and order in a draytech. If not I'll have a talk to the ISP. Looks like you're in a good position for an ISP chill (if this turns out to be an ISP issue) It seems that the majority of problems are ISP related to some degree. I kinda assumed most people have problems because they use sub standard equipment or because their lines are bad. Mostly because I've never really had an ISP issue (and this one isn't really *that* bad - it's only noticeable because of the heavy use)

2013-03-30 05:50:00 | I'll loan you a DV120 if you want? Ping me on GTalk. Rule that out, then harass your ISP... ;-) | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2013-03-30 06:46:00 | I'll borrow that DSL N12U I sold off after getting the wrong router. There's no shortage of spare gear here by a long shot. Thanks for the offer though :) | The Error Guy (14052) | |
2013-03-30 07:12:00 | ah, should have suspected that dynalink and swapped it out from the get go. Speedtest 10mbps/0.9mbps "problem" solved. As usual, half assed gear = half assed performance  I didn't suspect the modem at first since it had performed pretty well for me for a long time, just goes to show ya though.
