1309361 2012-10-29 05:59:00 Is anyone up with the current email going round about how credit card users can be scammed with an rfid reader?
I had an email today about this subject and thought it was just a hoax scaremongering one.
I had a look at the video, and thought that it was possible if you happened to have a c/card with the chip embedded in it. How safe are our c/cards debit/cards???

1309363 2012-10-29 06:25:00 Very.
As in the technology? Nothing is 100% secure. However, you know those fees you pay to have a credit card? Not it's enormous interest - the yearly fee. It's because should there be a legit dodgy transaction, or a steal or something, they refund you. And give you a new card - in case of theft type dodginess.

1309364 2012-10-29 06:25:00 Yeah, I'd say it's to do with 'Paywave'. I don't know anywhere that you can use it yet? So I wouldn't worry too much. pine-o-cleen (2955)
1309365 2012-10-29 06:30:00 Someone sent me this today. Normally I would just dismiss it as beingva hoax thing but it got my attention because the person who sent it has just got a new card from her bank with the wi-fi symbol on it.

1309366 2012-10-29 06:40:00 The RFID technologies in Visa and Mastercards only work from about 4cm away, so it's pretty hard to scan them without you noticing somebody hovering around your pocket with a scanner. The only place I've seen so far where they work was Kmart in the Albany mall. ryanjames.powell (13554)
1309367 2012-10-29 06:48:00 Also, regardless it's not the consumer's problem, it's totally the credit card company's liability if your card details get stolen and misused, it's in the contract. If it was a huge problem, the card companies would be implementing measures to protect themselves because in the end, it's them losing money, not you. ryanjames.powell (13554)

Don't worry about it LL, credit cards are safe.

1309369 2012-10-30 01:01:00 You could always just break the RFID chip if it has one, and use only the magnetic strip instead.

1309370 2012-10-30 07:02:00 Theoretically it's possible if you let someone get near-direct-contact (<6cm with nothing in the way) from the chip in your credit card. Typically in a wallet inside a bag/pocket it's extraordinarily unlikely. You could always get a shielded wallet if you're really paranoid ;) inphinity (7274)
