1335550 2013-04-08 00:10:00 Security Essentials is built into Windows 8 as "Windows Defender". Not to be confused with the crappy vista "Windows Defender". It should be fine for your needs. It works fine, unlike others like AVG.

If you want a paid one, everyone here suggests ESET NOD32.

1335551 2013-04-08 01:43:00 AVG Pftttttttttt heap of rubbish, bloatware, total waste of time.Ah, come on WT, its recommended by PCW and the like, so it has to be a good product. lol

Download Hitman pro there are X86 & x64 bit versions so make sure you get the right one for the PC (your PC)

Make a kickstart Drive Watch the Video HERE (www.surfright.nl) Then boot from the USB drive and run the program, instructions / Video from youtube Here (www.youtube.com) - Then once removed you can do regular checks and any repairs you want. :)

The latest versions of FBI wont allow you to get into safe mode - hitman Pro has a trial option for 30 days, its easy to operate :thumbs:Thanks for the heads up on this, I havent struck this latest one yet, Im hoping my virus prone customers who are mostly all on ESET now are suitably protected, but will be watching out for it. Appreciate your research, thanks.

1335552 2013-04-08 04:49:00 Just jumping in on the AVG beatdown :badpc:

Customer "upgraded" to AVG 2013 and email attachments (doc, pdf, xls, etc) won't open (Win Mail/Vista). Just some vague error "the command failed to execute". I've removed AVG and surprise surprise, that error has disappeared.

Computer yesterday, had AVG, it decides to load 3 minutes after everything else had finished.

The FBI warning is doing the rounds again, bit stronger this time even stops booting into safe mode -- Found a good way of getting it out as well :) That's a different thread though.

1335554 2013-04-08 21:26:00 I would go for Avast if you want a freebie or Avira if you don't mind the pop-ups.

www.av-test.org

MS Defender rates pretty poorly, even for a free product.

ESET will then perform its automatic start-up scan and deal with it, and then 10-15 minutes after (or once the scan is done), all you have to do is restart the computer and the system should be clean as before.
Sounds like they are on the ball, have yet to find out though.

1335557 2013-04-09 01:59:00 Got 1 in the workshop at the mo...
A new strain, Its NZ police (not FBI) now. :badpc:
Any news on how these FBI infections actually get in ? email or website(both ?)

FBI one yesterday was easy to remove, KAV & Mbytes via another PC.
Wanted to try Hitman, but had issues with Boot from USB on both PC;s I tried. Why didnt they have a bootable CD option ?? Seems to make more sense, to me.
Will Try Hitman on this NZ Police infection, just out of curiosty

1335559 2013-04-09 02:33:00 For Windows 8, Windows Defender (with Microsoft Security Essentials's antivirus capabilities) comes built-in :)

Wonder if the 3rd party AV companies will get up in arms about that the way people did about Microsoft bundling IE with Windows.
