2013-04-03 06:20:00 | From a bean counter's perspective maybe: The price is lesser with Telecom UFB if you need a landline, the others may or may not need to get a tech to do ATAs or get a copper line still (and pay). Yes, the modem is free so one can purchase one down the road. The contract is just one year so unless it is very horrrible, it saves you the $99 common connection fee. Having said that Snap's same 50GB Fibre 30 is $75 without a copper / landline. After going thru the process, you need a 12 month contract it appears or the 24 months. The free cheaper of the two modem is provided free if you sign a 24. Connection fee is waived it looks like, it notes that there are no start up costs. Maybe a safer bet from Orcon from what I heard with their routers at least for some customers. I think that going to UFB might be more straight forward than going VDSL and then UFB. Edit - the $400 fee Snap VDSL + landline is the cost of a splitter installed, which they say is required if you want VDSL + landline. :)

2013-04-03 06:33:00 | We are on adsl2 from a nearby green box. I cannot see us going to UFB in the near future & I guess a lot of people wont either. adsl2 is plenty fast enough for us, average home users(?). We only have 5GB with Orcon & rarely exceed that. UFB 'seems' to be dearer, for a lot of us the amount we pay for broadband is the important thing.Just my thoughts. PJ | Poppa John (284) | |
2013-04-03 07:05:00 | PJ - what I seen the fibre plans are like 50GB and up or family use . I think a lot of stuff in NZ is a bit behind eh . . like fashion and how they use the Internet also even when compared to say the UK . I tihnk that over the years like the decade, data might have gone cheaper I dunno . But . . data caps have gone up, speeds have also definitely . There might be a lack of competition and it might be a lot of spin by the parties . Webpages have been richer in detail and the odd 30min dosage of Shortland St per day which have been accomodated by the modest data increases . While the data caps have gone up it has only done so slowly . The price have been the same IMO after you adjust for CPI, like a entry plan or the med family or the higher usage plan . Back in the days a med family plan was maybe ok for the family but nowadays we have video streaming, partial or full HD and some even have super HD, you cannot those things too frequently . Maybe it's a view that here that the Internet is for the net and Freeview is for television . It's like mobile data, overseas people watch videos on the go, video chat etc but here it might be understood as it's the cellphone so don't use it too much until you get home . I've been watching some foreign drama shows on the net episode after episode, been doing about 10GB a day  Apart from vids, the benefit for UFB for me is things like webcam chat which ADSL2+ can crash and just the future proof issue .

2013-04-03 07:37:00 | Nomad...I hear what you are saying. I still cannot see us using UFB. Increasing speed & caps will encourage people todo more stuff. Fair enough, not for me tho'. PJ | Poppa John (284) | |
2013-04-03 08:59:00 | Exactly! A lot of people are in your situation PJ, and I fully endorse that. UFB and VDSL2 aren't for everybody. They're faster than ADSL2+, but it's fully optional... It's a premium service because it's faster and costs more. My theory is it may as well be "reliable" on top of that, hence why I'm not a huge fan of three things: 1) Unlimited plans <-- I'm yet to see a single ISP in this country do it well. Even Telecom, the nations biggest ISP, couldn't afford to keep it going. 2) Bundled routers <-- Never seen one half-decent given away. 3) Annual lock-ins <-- If you're a fan of somebodies service, you'll stay without being forced to!

2013-04-03 10:07:00 | Says I can't get it at my address until halfway through 2014. Though according to Chorus I can get VDSL2, but Telecom aren't selling it. Makes no sense!

2013-04-03 11:12:00 | Yeah I'm not apparently going to be getting it until 2016 or something.... Happy with VDSL2 for now though :D | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2013-04-03 19:20:00 | Hey Chill. In the very unlikely event i get fiber before 2020 will I need a new WiFi router or will the old ADSL one do?? | paulw (1826) | |
2013-04-03 19:58:00 | Most ADSL routers won't work, as you'll be connecting to it through an RJ45 connection. If you've been doing something like a Draytek DV120 in tandem with a Gargoyle Router, then basically you can either replace the DV120 with a DV2750 for VDSL2, or just simply drop the DV120 when you get UFB :) | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
