| 1470452 | 2020-07-19 01:21:00 | I have a upgrade on the drawing board for my gaming system. Just motherboard CPU & memory at this stage. The first two are easy but I am undecided on the appropriate memory speed. There are so many flavors to choose from. I will be using Intel i9-9900k CPU on Asus Z390-E motherboard. My first thought were 2x16 DDR4-3200 but the board will support up to 4266 MHz. I'm not intending to OC the CPU. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated |

| 1470455 | 2020-07-19 10:43:00 | Intel is not that memory speed dependant like AMD, 3200 would be fine IMHO. But then you are going all out with an i9 so if you want to go for faster RAM do it, won't hurt anything. Aren't the 10 series chips out now and better? |

If budget is an issue is there a specific reason why you are not looking at an AMD based platform? An Intel i9 9900K and a Z390-E (ROG STRIX Gaming) motherboard will set you back about $1250 (AU dollars) Ryzen 7 3800X and an Asus ROG STRIX B550-F Gaming (Wi-Fi 6) - $938 (AU dollars) you could go up to a Ryzen 9 which will take it up to about $1150. Ryzen gives you PCI-E 4.0 ryzen has higher L3 cache (36MB for the 3700X and 70MB for the 3900X vs a meager 16MB for the 9900K) The 3700X has better thermals than the 9900K with the 3900X rated at 10W higher than the 9900K Is Intel still the preferred CPU for gaming.... maybe but only just, at a higher price point and if you believe all their marketing gimmicks, the 10th Gen is nothing spectacular and still on the 14nm manufacturing process (which has been around since about 2014/15). Yes Ryzen is more suited to multi-threaded workloads and games are not there yet (multi-thread) but if I were to re-build my rig (currently Intel 8th Gen) I'd be going to Ryzen over an Intel platform. The difference in performance is negligible at best and Intel no longer enjoys a country mile lead when it comes to performance. The other consideration is that if you're intending this as a gaming rig your 2080 is going to do all the heavy lifting there so with that in mind Ryzen would be the way to go from a price-to-performance stand point, you could use the extra $$$ and spring for some faster memory which Ryzen loves. You know, my mum has heaps of money left over after paying the bills. Without a mortgage - or rent - it's not hard to survive on the pension. However, buy last years GPU then, but high end. Not this years crap card. |

| 1470461 | 2020-07-20 04:19:00 | Well to keep adding to the choices, even if you keep everything the same otherwise you could consider dropping back to an i7 9700K to save money, very close to the same gaming performance and a cheaper price. The i9 doesn't really add much for gamers. I built myself a new PC for my 50th 2 years ago and went for a Ryzen 2700X and it has yet to break a sweat. I only have a 1070 GPU though. Been very happy with it. What's your current gaming system ? |
