| 1470426 | 2020-07-15 23:14:00 | Hello, my son's Gaming PC (also our media server) is not coping with some of the newer games. I was looking at replacing the whole box - say around $2300 models but when i compare the specs of his current PC versus the boxes - the specs all seem quite similar except the graphics card His current graphics card is a Geforce GTX 1070 - looking at replacing it with a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER. ($about $869) The next bit is where i need help please; 1) is it easy to physically swap out the cards (me or someone who is not a noob)? 2) would changing up the graphics card help boost game performance for a while? Thanks in advance. |

Yes. Yes. The graphics card is the single most important component for gaming. Buy the best you can afford. If this years card is too much, buy last years high end card. Check the power supply requirement, if it's a big jump, you may need more power...although if it was gaming capable to start with, probably not. www.tomshardware.com Scroll down, cards are ranked best to worst. The new nVidia 3xxx and AMD BigNAVI cards are due out in September (maybe) which could mean the current 2xxx series (in particular) will see a price drop so you could see yourself getting a 2080 series for $800. The same could be said for BigNAVI IF AMD manage to deliver something that is actually competitive with nVidia... A lot of variables and most of the time its about spend now or wait... if you're willing to drop $800+ on a GPU now then I'd be inclined to go with a 2070 instead again the caveat would be if 3xxx or BigNAVI are as good as we hope then you'd be better off waiting (from a dollar vs performance point). |

The 2060 super is a definite upgrade, but maybe not enough of one to be worth it. Next year you may be right back where you are now. I'd suggest going up a notch to a 2070 super, assuming the rest of your PC is ok or if AMD is an option the 5700XT is a good price/$ option |
