1475494 2021-03-15 23:00:00 It's still the "Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals" in the UK and used to be here until a while ago. Now it's just the SPCA. Why did they drop the "Royal"?:confused Roscoe (6288)
1475495 2021-03-16 01:46:00 They are trying to find a Maori language name to replace it with:) CliveM (6007)

Perhaps I am a little bit older than you as I recall it being known as the RSPCA. The title "Royal" is not snob value but is a Royal Charter bestowed by the Crown. These days the SPCA's official title which I found out on their website is: "The SPCA (Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Incorporated) is a registered charity."

But what I wondered was why and when was the "Royal" dropped from the name the SPCA is known as.

1475499 2021-03-16 05:38:00 The Society received royal patronage in 1840 .

In 1933, the various separate Societies decided to amalgamate as a Federation . Out of this grew the national organisation, SPCA New Zealand .
