137843 2003-04-22 07:07:00 Hi

I am wanting to buy a CD-ROM RW and would appreciate some recommendations.

Something reliable and easy to use. Nothing flashy - I am not burning music CDs (perish the thought !) but just want to have a really good backup should (when) the hard drive crashes - the idea of saving onto 600 floppies is not appealing.

Dick Smith have a good deal: CyberDrive 52 read/52 write/24 rewrite for $139 (GST incl) - normally they sell at $229. Apparently these are the writers DS put in their PCs.

Asus 52/52/24 retail for $155; LG 52/52/24 for $146.

Does anyone have an opinion/suggestions about what to look for and a solid, reliable brand ? My price range is $200max.

PC Direct; PII; 266MHZ; Win98

Cheers

Gary

137844 2003-04-22 07:16:00 My experiences with Cyberdrive are not good. Wouldn't touch another with a barge pole. Have had 2 LG drives 16 & 52 write speed with no problems. From what I can gather from others experience, is, just about any brand is good, apart from HP & Cyberdrive. Pheonix (280)
137845 2003-04-22 07:48:00 Don't touch CyberDrive, it is no good . How about one of these . . .

Aopen 52/52/24 CD-RW for $89 from NFC Computers (http://www . nfc . co . nz)

Definitely recommended, although not sure of stock availbility as it looks too cheap!!!

Good luck,

137846 2003-04-22 08:02:00 i hear Aopen, ASUS, Lite are good ones. Of course Plextor is pricey thou... unsure about Sony.

137847 2003-04-22 08:03:00 My 5 pence worth, I would go for the Asus CDRW, not necessarily the fastest one you can get your hands on, I have the 24x10x40 and its plenty fast enough, very reliable (so far) and great looks, but then looks are in the eye of the beholder .

Even comes with Nero :)

137848 2003-04-22 08:03:00 Stay well away from Cyberdrive they are the bottom of the barrel .

Good brands would be ASUS, LG, LiteOn, Plextor . Personally i'd grab a LG these thing are solid, fast, and cheap . They offer the same preformance as the ASUS but are slightly cheaper . Plextor and LiteOn are a bit hard to find in NZ and are on the expensive .

Forget the rest just get a LG I'v have never heard a bad thing about them, you should be able to pick up a retail drive for about $140 .

137850 2003-04-22 08:15:00 Asus, AOpen, LG. Uh. My Samsung drive started to fail (COMBO: DVD and CD-R/W). TDK is good. agent (30)
137851 2003-04-23 06:34:00 Thanks for all your replies - I certainly won't be buying CyberDrive . The guy at Dick Smith's says they put it in all of their PCs - puts me off DSs PCs totally .

The $89 looks tempting . . . . but I think I am moving towards an LG - they were ranked 2nd= in a Consumer Magazine test last year (Imation was rated the best) . And all the feedabc from your guys rated them well too .

Thanks again - I hope you get to see this email becuase I don't know how to thank you otherwise .
