137611 2003-04-21 13:01:00 It is possible to disable the messenger service that receives it.

I wouldn't be doing that though (well I would for other reasons though). I would look into what internet security you have in place.

137613 2003-04-23 03:00:00 ZoneAlarm doesn't block them, I have received the messages between five and ten times. You can either get a better firewall (don't recall it, but a search for "RPC" or "Messenger service" should find the other thread that popped up here a while ago like this.

If you don't care about sending or receiving "netsend" messages, and don't have a UPS device, it is probably safe to disable the Messenger service, though I have a feeling that the remote shutdown tool in XP (not sure about Win2K) might use this to send out it's alerts.

There is a difference between the Windows Messenger service and MSN Messenger Service. MSN Messenger is an Instant Messaging Program, the Windows Messenger Service is a "winpopup" based Messaging service which was origionally intended for LAN administrators to send out messages to their clients should there be Server Maintainence happening, and so forth. However, with the spread of NT Based Machines (2000 and XP), which come with the Windows Messenging Service Enabled, it has also seen an increase in Net Send Spam, refer to my thread below in regards to the thread which discusses it and how to get rid of it
