2003-04-22 09:32:00 | About 40 years ago I lived on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. It is often called the "Misty Isle". Once someone posted a very short response, basically just agreeing with what I had said and finished by saying - I agree Misty Isle. I thought this person is very perceptive - how did he/she work it out ? Turned out it was my daughter who is at present living in London. So our participants are far flung ! :)

2003-04-22 16:20:00 | Well firstly one day I was forced to think of a nickname so I came up with Power Striker. It might have originated from the computer game 'Dark Reign' where the unit goes round and sabotages the enemies generators cutting off the power :) I can't remember if I thought it up before they did... Then I found out that a few people had that nickname so I modified it a bit and it became PowaStryker. Then I decided to use just Stryker, but got into a row with the name clash in a computer game. Ended up turning into a battle for the name...I lost 3/3 cos I was new to the game, ah well. :) Then I decided that PowaStryker was too long so it turned into Powa. I used that for about a year and no-one seemed to have taken it in hotmail or icq...then a year later I did a search and there were about 100 different Powas...grr...inevitable I suppose. So I made my name unique using some symbols from the good ol' character map, PôWâ. It kinda works with how your supposed to accent the name. Unfortunately most website don't allow ascii characters, so I don't use it all that often. Then a friend suggested I put "Ki" on the end of it to show what country I'm from (Kiwi) aka NZ so now I'm " PôWâKî " :). I sorta started a trend with another dude as well, hes an aussie and he puts "Ka" on the end of his name (short for Kangaroo).

2003-04-22 21:14:00 | I always used the name Polly (short for my real name) in score tables of computer games etc, and when I first logged in my ISP the I found that the name was already taken, so I tried Pollly and it worked! | Pollly (1416) | |

You'll come up with two Arguses; the thousand-eyed eternally aware watchman who was turned into a peacock; I saw that as appropriate to forums in which you keep abreast of the state of affairs. It's why newspapers are still (sometimes) called The (Wherever) Argus. It also alludes discreetly to my spare-time occupation of voyeur :-) The other Argus is Ulysses's (or Odysseus's) old dog, which is what I feel more like sometimes. And as I discovered through online chat with a Nederlander or Scandinavian (can't remember which) "Argus-eyed" in his language means having a serious and rather gloomy demeanour. That fits too, sometimes. To judge from the "another user already has that name" messages in online forums, it's very popular :-) Drawback - people call me Angus. Nothing against Anguses, it's just not me. Second drawback - on some chat channels, it's unwise to choose a name that puts you at the top of the list, because you're very near the "ban" button. In one particular channel I used to get chopped regularly by fumble-fingered front-line operators, who had to go through a Byzantine process of getting me readmitted by a super-operator. This used to take about 20-30 minutes. Argus PS, and OT to the OT: have you ever been in an interactive chat forum and had your remarks rejected because of a clumsy automatic censor. I hit one once where you couldn't utter a sympathetic "Awww" or "owww!" because of an anti-website-spam precaution that meant you weren't allowed more than two consecutive w's. |

2003-04-23 02:03:00 | My handle "Nomad1" came from many years ago when CB radios had to be licenced - Wellington call signs started with WN - when driving around NZ I used WN to make "Wellington Nomad" - when it came to computing it got changed to Nomad - but a lot of log ins required a number hence the "1" | Nomad1 (3546) | |
2003-04-23 04:57:00 | I first came in here with the name: "Chris Wilson", but after failing to get a webserver that would run well or stabily under a windows enviroment, i decided some months ago to take my limited understanding of windows, and learn how to run a webserver and other things under Linux... I soon felt VERY "clueless" and decided to ask Linux questions under that name. These days Linux is my preferred operating system, but i have a ALOT to learn before i could call myself "capable" :D . I've had alot of fun with "Clueless".. its a great disclaimer! Still, like with Chill, the name will no dought evolve over time. .Clueless
