137550 2003-04-21 11:26:00 4 PC's, all running XP. Nothing crashes any more. Nil, zero.

Prior system was Win ME, which was quite stable also provided each PC was rebooted at least twice per day.

One PC runs 24/7, (600 MHz Celeron). Others as required. Office XP running on 3 PCs, which is also stable.

The only things that have ever crashed XP were a non compatable winmodem, and a non compatable webcam. I cannot recall any instability since then. Of course I dont load every demo app, do P2P etc, which helps?

137551 2003-04-21 11:51:00 I run WinXP Pro on my main computer, and usually don't have any problems.

Internet explorer, that I used to use a lot (till I discovered opera7 just recently) never really crashed that I can remember.

Opera7.0 was good and didn't crash on me at all.. Yesterday I upgraded to opera7.1 and it has crashed about once on me and also accidentally closed down itself about 6times so far.

In opera7 I usually right-clicked on the page and went 'close tab'. In opera7.1 they really, really, really stuffed it up and put the 'close all' tab really close to the 'close tab', so when I'm in a hurry I accidentally move the mouse down a little too far (1mm) and hit close all and it closes opera down with all my 10windows with it! #$@#!$@* Its really really pissing me off, and I think I'll go abuse the people at opera now so they fix it!

Also people DO NOT download the latest java virtual machine update from sun "j2re-1_4_1_02" because it has just stuffed up java on my machine, and it won't even uninstall so I can fix it. Consequently I can't access my hushmail :\

Yea thats my bit :)

137552 2003-04-21 11:59:00 with the java closeing down you can use the "confirm shutdown" optoin so it asks you before shutting down. also if you use the startup panel you can go right back to where you left off.

no problem here with java 1.4.1_02. you may have had a corupt download.

137553 2003-04-21 12:20:00 Mozilla hasn't crashed on me since 0.9.4 (excluding 1.3b which had win9x issues), and I'm usually running the latest "unstable" release.

I only use IE for Windows Update, although that hasn't stopped it from crashing a couple of times.

OS wise: Win 98 is pretty good as long as you watch what you install & are nice to it. I can go days without a crash (not running 24/7).

Linux has crashed (kernel panic) on me I believe 6 times since 1999 when I started using it. Almost all were related to my modem driver. I've crashed X a few times, usually when I do some opengl programming.

My fairly limited Windows XP experience wasn't very good. But I think it was just showing how sensitive it is to bad drivers (SIS suck).

No problems with java here. Maybe you installed the MS java virtual machine and then tried to install the Sun version on top? Just a guess.

nah it won't be that. i have both installed. they can live with each other quite happly. with IE you can simply change from one to the other and back again if you so wish. opera can't use MSjava.

137556 2003-04-21 13:08:00 I then ran into problems trying to uninstall Java _02 version, it just won't do it - it hangs on "installing the JAR files". I've had to run Norton Cleansweep to get rid of it then, regclean, then reboot a few times.

Then it would only install the older verson ( _01 ), when I tried to install the new version again, it said It was already installed and would I like to uninstall the new version - click yes and it apparently uninstalls it, but the thing is still left in the add/remove programs list.

Anyway I've got the old version going again (_01)...that didn't even reinstall first time either (kept freezing on same thing). I figured NAV might have something to do with it, and turned autoprotect off, then it worked.

Oh well...if only opera worked for hushmail...then I wouldn't have to use IE

137557 2003-04-21 13:29:00 Since running Win 2000 only when I get a dodgy magazine CD. (PC Pro from England)
NS7.02 is as solid as a rock
Delphi 7 also solid.
Dreamweaver solid.

137559 2003-04-21 19:41:00 I cannot answer on the basis of the fact that I have just retired my Win98 machine that desperately needed re-installation and was an absolute shocker towards the end. My new machine is running XP and hasn't had a chance to crash (been running about five days).
Mind you, I wish I could say that a P4 2.4 ran noticeably faster than a P3 733. I don't think I can.
