138295 2003-04-24 02:33:00 I know that Win98 is apparently very unstable, which is why they released Win98SE. Can somebody tell me WHY it was so unstable, and what makes 98SE much better than 98?

I've been told/heard about "don't use Win98 1st edition...", but I don't actually know why.

To what I know/heard 98 SE is they bug fix for 98 first edition, but I am not too sure about that or even if that is true.

But I know that Win ME is a more stable then the 98 version :)

138297 2003-04-24 03:17:00 OK. Thanks Stu. I've installed Win98 on a computer, and it doesn't seem to run any less stable than my Win98SE or WinXP Home computer. somebody (208)
138298 2003-04-24 03:22:00 Usually causes more problems later on with addition of other programs in first edition. You know you can install Win98SE using the same licence number as first edition. As long as they are both the same type ie both upgrade editions or both complete retail versions. Pheonix (280)
138299 2003-04-24 07:18:00 98SE also has ICS :-)

A very welcome addition to Windows :D

138300 2003-04-24 08:17:00 So what is ICS?

Searching Google gave integrated circuit solutions or similar.

I'm still using Win98 1st edn quite happily, it doesn't seem very unstable to me.

But what am I missing out on? What's ICS, and why should I need/want/use it?

138301 2003-04-24 08:27:00 Apart from the bug fixes which have been mentioned, and which were included in Win98 Service Pack 1, SE edition had:

Internet Explorer 5.0
NetMeeting 3.0
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
Support for USB, IEEE-1394
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface.

138303 2003-04-24 09:04:00 I use W98 original and it is 100% stable. Cross fingers, I have never had an OS BSOD though the odd program freezes from time to time.

My OS has been running stably for over three years with daily use (business) and has never been reinstalled. Mind you, I do plenty of housekeeping and don't surf in dangerous waters or download spurious software.

IMHO operating systems are as stable as you allow them to be.

Cheers

138304 2003-04-24 09:12:00 No way ME is the worst os out! It does nothing but CRASH. The main diff between 98 and 98 SE is yes ICS and windowsupdate (I cant remember if 98 has that), but 98 SE does. i havent used it so long i cant remember! I'm using XP atm Spacemannz (808)
