2003-04-24 01:45:00 | ok guys heres my problem, i have 2 working sticks of ram.. both are same make and are 333mhz (ddr). i can use either one of them but if i use both then i get lock ups in games such as warcraft, counterstrike and age of empires. my specs are... xp2400 (o/c'ed) -> and no setting it back to default clock does not help asus a7n8x dlx (not rev 2.0) win 98se

2003-04-24 02:22:00 | Apparently Win98SE can't handle more than 512mb of RAM. I suspect that you bought 2 512 mb sticks? | somebody (208) | |
2003-04-24 04:14:00 | no no both are 256... so ideas? | wong_si_fu (3663) | |
2003-04-24 05:47:00 | Overclocking always means that you are exceeding the specifications of the components. Most memory is "optimistically" rated for speed. I've seen serious suggestions that it should always be run at one speed step down from the manufacrturer's rating. The fact that one stick works, and two won't, indicates that the memory bus can handle the loading (capacitance, mostly) presented by one stick, but not two. Can you fiddle the memory speed/CPU multiplier to run the memory slower? The alternative would be to try one 512 stick.

2003-04-24 10:02:00 | i o/c the cpu not the ram so i cant see why that would affect the ram, the fsb is set to 333 still, so the ram runs in sync (333ddr) so i doubt its a prob with my running my cpu on a higher multi, and for the 512 idea.. well i cant return my ram cus ------QMB IS DODGY!!!!-------- so yeah.. any other ideas guys? help me out here.. 256 sux | wong_si_fu (3663) | |
2003-04-24 11:54:00 | you'd prolly have more luck with assistance on this at an overclocking forum such as forums.overclockers.co.nz or forums.overclockers.com.au first of all, do not use win98 or winme. they are demon spawn and must be avoided at all costs. Get win2k or xp and then see if you have the same problem.. as far as hardware is concerned; do you have the sticks on seperate memory controllers? (eg slot 1 & 3) how about both on just one controller? (eg slot 1 & 2) what ras/cas timings have you got your sticks set to? While my samsung tcb3's are going fine at 333 5-2-2-2, your sticks may only be happy with 333 7-3-3-3. What brand sticks are you using? and finally a suggestion: install both sticks and download memtest (http://www.memtest86.com), then bench those sticks and look for errors.
