138075 2003-04-23 04:44:00 Hi there,

Recently I had the misfortune of lop.com installing itself on my computer. What a nightmare it was to get rid of. I first tried SpyBot with no luck. Then Lavasoft. No luck. Finally Eraser Pro did the trick and got rid of it. The problem is that now my computer is crashing very frequently. While it crashed occasionally before this episode it was nowhere as bad as it is now.

I wonder whether runnning the three 'cleaning' programmes has deleted some essential files which is causing the computer to crash so badly? Not sure. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am running Windows 98 SE and have Nortons' Crash Guard (2000) operating. Previously the Norton's would help me unfreeze, now it is itself frozen every time the computer crashes.

Many thanks.

Max

138076 2003-04-23 05:36:00 what programs have you got running in the background?

what ver of adaware did you use? (exact ver please) .

you can get rid of crashguard as it causes more crashes than it stops, which is why nortons has dropped it .

any error messages when it crashes?

138077 2003-04-23 07:10:00 Crashguard was more trouble than it was worth...I recommend getting rid of it alotogether. Johhny Cat (3510)
138078 2003-04-23 10:28:00 Right . . . Crashguard is going because I also think that it is the cause of a lot of my troubles .

As to the programmes open, those that I can identify are:

Crashguard
Desktop Arcitect
Some Task Scheduler thing
AVG Antivirus
MSN Messenger
DirectScan (Photo Scan)
Display Settings

When I hit ctrl, alt, delete to see what is running, there is alist of about 20 names there . Let me know if I should post this information as well .

As for Adaware it was version 6 ("Ad-aware 6 Personal, Build 126")

No erro messages other than the crashguard message sayng that Norton has intercepted a crash on the programme I was using (eg word) and would I like to unfreeze? By this stage the whole show has come to a grinding holt .

Many many thanks for your help .

138081 2003-04-23 11:40:00 Have you noticed the hard drive churning away, yet you aren't doing anything? Or sometimes you seem to laggggg. That is the findfast. It is supposed to cruise your drive learning where all your documents are. I always turn it off with no noticable difference to opening my documents, or finding them. Pheonix (280)
138082 2003-04-24 04:04:00 I agree with Pheonix - get rid of (totally) the FindFast from Control Panel . It is a useless resource hog .

For the others Osa, Mhprmind and WKcalrem could probably go depending on how attached you are to their "services" .

Go to www . pacs-portal . co . uk ( . pacs-portal . co . uk/startup_content . htm#THE_PROGRAMS" target="_blank">www . pacs-portal . co . uk) and look up the ones I have mentioned to see what they belong to .

These suggestions may not fix the problems you are experiencing since removing Lop . com but it will do no harm to try them .

Let us know how you get on .
