138045 2003-04-23 04:16:00 When doing something such as a virus check or defrag, my pc appears to have untold thousands of .tmp files in Temporary Internet files\Internet Explorer\Setup\Contents (At least thats pretty close) - yet when you go into the Temp. Int.files folder there are no other folders and a file search doesn't find them either.
Are these files really needed or should I somehow search for "hidden" files and delete them.
They seem to be taking up quite a bit of space so I would like to remove them if possible.
Cheers. ?:|

138046 2003-04-23 04:44:00 Click on View (or Tools) when viewing the folder, click Folder Options, and click on The View tab. Scroll down to the part that says "Hidden files and folders", and select 'Show hidden files and folders'. Also deselect 'Hide file extensions for known file types' and 'Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)'.

Then see if the files are there.

138047 2003-04-23 04:45:00 Have a look at FAQ #9a -- link top right of this page.

You might like to look at #9b as well while you are there, if you are using Win 95 or 98.

138048 2003-04-23 04:48:00 Go to Control Panel then click on Folder options then click on the view tab then look for "hidden & folders

Then select "show hidden files & folders”

Hope this helps

138050 2003-04-24 23:32:00 Hi all, had a look around last night and found under Temp.Int.files\Content IE5 a folder called "HNAKC9AX" - this folder had approx. 22,000 wbk****.tmp files taking up about 280M.
I deleted them (took an hour and a half) - what I would like to know is :
What is this folder for?
What writes these "wbk" files (some where from today).
And how do I get rid of what ever is doing it?

Looking forward to your helpful replies soon ?:|

138051 2003-04-25 00:09:00 Ithink you will find these folders and there should be about 10 or so of them, on some systems the contence of these folders is not veiwable in windows, they are only veiwable from bootup dos mode, They are your internet cache files. they make web pages you have visited in the past load quicker in the future iron-zeus (3479)
138052 2003-04-25 00:14:00 pictures etc from web pages you have visited. It is so you can "quickly load" previously visited web pages. Why they squirrel them away and hide them...only MS can tell you. In win95 & 98 you normally have to go through DOS and not just the DOS window to delete them. Pheonix (280)
138053 2003-04-25 00:21:00 wbk files are MS Word backup files.

Check creation dates and compare to Internet history. It is possible that they are the result of accessed web pages being created using MS Word. Contact MS for further info.

As a workaround, delete temporary internet files on a regular basis.

Just a comment - don't take it the wrong way - but isn't it a bit dangerous deleteing something that you don't know what its for?
