138060 2003-04-23 03:49:00 Am wanting to buy a new PC and this time would like to try some real video editing (ie historic VCR tapes). The Dell Dimension 4 CPU 1.50GHz have presently will not perform satisfactorily at all in this field.
To have a PC built – to handle video editing with today’s availability of hardware does anyone have any suggestions for:
CPU – say up to $500
Motherboard – say up to $300
Video Card – with Video In – Video Out – say up to $400
RAM?
Do know that getting into video editing on a PC can be a bottomless financial pit but any suggestions to help out an old fella would be appeciated!

138061 2003-04-23 04:03:00 Your current CPU sounds enough if you ask me. I did some work on a 500MHz one. But if you still want to go ahead, get an AMD AthlonXP 2400+, for about $250; mobo to handle that should be around $250 too, depends on features and brand, video card with video in and video out, well, you could get an add-on card for less than $200, but I'm not sure if you could get a new graphics card with video editing capability for less than $400. I'd say 512MB RAM, should be about $120. agent (30)
138062 2003-04-23 05:54:00 I agree with Agent that your current CPU should handle the job sufficiently -- have you actually tried it? You have not stated how much RAM you have in that machine and if there is not enough adding some more may make the world of difference.

If you still want a new PC regardless, however, have a look at websites with component selectors, eg Ascent.

138063 2003-04-23 06:18:00 A fast, large Hard Drive. I would say at least a 7200rpm ATA 100 or 133.

80GB should be plenty, and they're not too expensive (Slightly over $200 incl. GST)

138064 2003-04-23 22:01:00 Susan - thanks - yeah have tried it - very "jumpy" - just not good enough - have 384 RAM. Have been looking at components at www.pp.co.nz/ - in no great rush - just would like to try and get it right this time! stuffed (1469)

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater! That machine is fine for the job. What capture card are you using? What OS are you running? What format are you capturing in? There are any number of causes for 'jumpy' capture. Tell use your exact computer model number and configuration and we may be able to tell you what's wrong.

138067 2003-04-23 22:51:00 These prices are from Feb though.... somebody (208)
138068 2003-04-23 23:01:00 If you goto QMB.co.nz, you'll save $50 on the CPU alone :-)

They do post out parts too :-)
Chilling_Silently (228)
138069 2003-04-23 23:36:00 Not necessarily. QMB doesn't include GST does it? From memory, they didn't, and other parts (RAM, hard drives etc.) were $20 or so more expensive.

Note that the prices I quoted are outdated - I got them in Februrary of this year, and I haven't been checking them for a while.

PP.co.nz's prices are all GST inclusive.

I got an interesting quote from a company (I forgot who), who charged $10+GST freight per item, which worked out as $120+GST in freight alone. PP has free freight, and all prices are GST inclusive.

Note that I have not purchased anything from PP before, and have not connections with them whatsoever, if it sounds like I'm trying to do free advertising.
