137979 2003-04-23 00:09:00 over the past few months ive been 'trying out' firewall software such as kerio, tiny personal firewall, nortons personal, zonealarm, and the latest, sygate, all with expected results, but after a while 'stuffing out', right now, i want to fix a problem i assume has ben caused by sygate (maybe because of other contributing factors, but in the end, sygate i assume)

the problem i have atm is that only IE can 'access' the internet, but all other apps i use (other browsers, such as firebird/opera, dl managers, etc) cant, ive done the obvious thing (cleanly uninstalled sygate, and done a quick once over with regcleaner), but these other vital programs still have a prob working properly, i remember this one time with zone alarm where it totally lockeddown net access, and i had to go through some process, anyone know what i can do? help ..

grtz sal.

137980 2003-04-23 02:33:00 Hi Sal, you sound almost as miserable as I am . I have just wiped out my bookmarks folder in Opera and have no backup . :_| Stoopid gurl I am . You can borrow my shoulder if I can borrow yours . :p

Hmmm, how about reinstalling one of the programs to see if it can get back on the net? If it does you can reinstall the others .

Failing that, try removing and reinstalling TCP/IP settings and if that doesn't work reinstall Windows? Or reformat?? :O

What Windows are you using again?

137981 2003-04-23 03:03:00 Have you set up Sygate to allow your programs to access the internet? Otherwise when your programs try, and a window pops up, you have to say "yes" to allowing it. somebody (208)

137983 2003-04-23 05:45:00 Cool. Fingers are crossed for the others. :-)

That will make two of us happy again then because I found a backup of my Opera bookmarks file in an unexpected place so I have them all back now. Yippee!!! :D

BTW you disappeared before you got your chocolate fish (and big hug :p) for the code the other night so here it is now:

137984 2003-04-23 14:08:00 if you really want a firewall, go with a seperate box (anything old like a P133 will do.. parts can be picked up for free to cheap) running a linux based firewall like smoothwall, ipcop or the slightly trickier freesco or the really tricky LRP

However if you are using an internal pci modem, chances are you'll have to look elsewhere for connectivity.. an internal ISA hardware modem for dial up, or an external router for dsl...

smoothwall and ipcop are really easy to setup, configure, and are basically set and forget. they just require a basic understanding of networking (just setting addresses etc) so you can easily get help here

the advantage is that you never ever have to use a silly little resource taking firewall application that buggars up your programs. if you are running a small network, your computers can finally talk to each other freely without having said firewalls getting in the way... and there is an actual security difference.. i think the saying goes "its like the difference between locking your jewellry box and leaving your front door open, or just locking your front door"

137986 2003-04-24 01:16:00 Have you tried Re-Installing Sygate, Enabling free-access for everything to the net, then re-uninstalling it?

Hopefully it may then remember that everything has free-reign access to the web and wont block it if there are remnants still onyour PC :-)
