2003-04-22 21:43:00 | Can you please advise the process in changing my Internet connection from a dialup to ADSL/ Router. Using win 98 SE & i.e 5.5. I have connected & Configured the ADSL Modem via USB and is working correctly. I have altered the Internet options to "Never dial a connection". My question is what is the best option for the LAN Settings? Use the " automatically detect settings" , "Use auto config script" or "use proxy server"? the IP address from the Router is 172.168.1.2 Many Thanks.

2003-04-22 22:35:00 | Yes, All arranged with xtra. the ADSL Modem status light shows green indicating a valid connection with the adsl service. At the moment am trying to "connect " to the ADSL Modem, to assess the web based set-up for the modem. but am unsure of the settings when changing from Dial-up to LAN setting.

I do seem to remember that you have to go to [IP address of router which in your case would be http://172.168.1.2, but I cannot remember if there is a certain port used. I don't know the brand/type of modem you're using, but here (xtra.co.nz) is a document about connecting to a Nokia modem, and here (www.xtrasite.co.nz CMany%3Econnect+OR+to+OR+adsl+OR+router%29%2C%5B%2 E20%5D%28%3CYesNo%3E%28%3CMany%3Econnect+AND+to+AN D+adsl+AND+router%29%29%2C%5B%2E10%5D%28%28%3CMany %3Econnect+OR+to+OR+adsl+OR+router%29+%3CIn%3E+%60 title%60%29%2C%5B%2E10%5D%28%3CYesNo%3E%28%28%3CMa ny%3Econnect+AND+to+AND+adsl+AND+router%29+%3CIn%3 E+%60title%60%29%29%2C%5B%2E10%5D%28%28%3CMany%3Ec onnect+OR+to+OR+adsl+OR+router%29+%3CIn%3E+%60note %60%29%2C%5B%2E10%5D%28%3CYesNo%3E%28%28%3CMany%3E connect+AND+to+AND+adsl+AND+router%29+%3CIn%3E+%60 note%60%29%29%29%29&QueryText=connect+to+adsl+router&Collection=www-xtra&ResultTemplate=inetstd%2Ehts&Action=Search&QueryMode=) is the search I used. Long URL, but you might just find your router/modem type in there, as it must be a JetStream compatible one. |

2003-04-22 23:55:00 | > the IP address from the Router is 172.168.1.2 Are you sure that's the correct IP Address range you can use on an Internal network?? From memory shouldn't it be something like: 192.168.xxx.xxx - Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Or 172.16.xxx.xxx Up to 172.32.xxx.xxx Subnet 255.255.0.0 Or 10.0.0.0 Subnet 255.0.0.0 Also, 172.168.1.2 is registered to AOL CyberChuck

2003-04-23 00:22:00 | Might be registered to AOL, but go to http://172.168.1.2 and it returns a blank page. Also, 172.168 is the correct IP range for an internal only network. | agent (30) | |
2003-04-23 00:33:00 | Hi MB I think that most of the settings you need are in This Thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) but I don't know how they are set up for USB connections. Regardless though, I presume you will need to enter Xtra's DNS addresses plus the gateway, subnet mask and your computer's IP address. I also presume that a Wizard will lead you through this. | 137959 | 2003-04-23 01:31:00 | Best option is to use Auto Detect for USB Drives I assume. If it was an Ethernet Router I'd use Automatic Script and the IP would be 172.168.1.2 and nothing else not even http://172.168.1.2 because that's telling it to use port 80 when a gateway is probably dynamic. If in the Automatic Script that IP works then use that and uncheck the auto detect.
