138597 2003-04-24 11:04:00 Hi guys,a mate of mine has a problem where he can dial up and verify with his ISP,but can't download anything, pages e-mail,anything.We deleted and reinstalled TCP/IP,uninstalled Norton Systemworks, checked all settings we could find, but nothing.Any ideas?
He's running win 98se,and it was working 2 days ago.The same thing happened late last year, and the only thing we could do in the end was reformat and reinstall.Don't want to do that unless we have to.

who is his ISP??

Probably one of those winmodems?

Have you looked in the Internet Security Zone in IE?

Tools / Internet Options / Security
Click Internet
Click Custom level
Ensure there are dots in the boxes to allow downloading of pages and data etc

138601 2003-04-24 19:10:00 Hello,

i did a basic networking cert [basic compared to some of you out there] and would like to mention you might want to go up through the layers of say the osi model or perhaps at a beginner level thing try some tcp/ip diagnostics

1. verify the adapter appears to be working in device manager
2. do test data to the device in say modem manager or a lan loopback test or through perhaps a mft diagnostic disk
3. check cabling

4. try tools such as ping to check that you can ping other machs
5. if it fails try traceroute to pin it down to the problem possible

what sort of internet connection are we talking about here?

and do you have NIS or perhaps another firewall/filter present?
