138590 2003-04-24 10:32:00 I'm looking to get a couple of laptops, hopefully under $2g each, XP, 256+ram, 1g+ cpu, 10g+ harddrive, 14" screen...nothing too flash, just good enough to run basic kids learning programs (phonics, mathstorm, eduenglish and the like...)

anyone any ideas/recommendations?
can be from abroad (oz, uk, usa), but would prefer from nz (service backup etc)

thanks

138591 2003-04-24 11:25:00 i would get here.

issues assoc. w/ importing the gst and the freight. also foreign credit cards $$ exchange rates. custom may get frightened if more than jus one laptop. despite its gotta intl warranty. if was one maybe i could consider.... if just one - i would ask someone to get for me when they or myself travel.

well, u could buy one by one and pay one by one gst and freight. $$. would not surprise me if custom picks up one addrress (same) has 5 separate orders that custom need to send u letter to pay gst. every item thats been gst $100 min has never failed my expectation custom would send me a letter asking for gst payment.

138592 2003-04-24 11:54:00 You won't need 256 megs of ram for kids programs, unless they like playing Doom 3 or Splinter Cell

Anyway,

The Pc Company (dont know addy, do a search on google.com)

You can easily get a good laptop for 2 grand. What costs the most in laptops is cdrw and graphics cards and 15" screens and stuff.

138594 2003-04-24 21:07:00 Thanks guys, I think I have the picture gst wise Ray after ZK's post...where is he when you need him...? a mate's going to oz soon but the price probably isn't to different there.
Mark I think xp need 256 to run proprely (after buying 1 with only 128 and knowing how pathetic it was until I put a bit more ram in!)
Thanks Murry this one (www.nfc.co.nz) doesn't look too bad, dvd rewrite, 15" n'all...
I wonder if i can run these progs we have on linux...? and if so maybe I don't need 256??

and if your looking in zk, dig up your best price for this one (or 2!)

138595 2003-04-26 02:30:00 where's ek?? yeah... never here when u need him.
if those lappies were $1,500 for eq one in shops of $2k-2.5k i would not mind if i were in need of one or two B-)

those savings would be for myself to fix the lappie if it does crash and burn :D

3k .... blah.... a 2k lappie and a $800 palm tungsten w/ keyb and $200 in booze duty free when i travel :p

acer/asus?? well if u buy local from a reputable store - should not be too bad.....

138596 2003-04-26 05:11:00 yea where is he? after all that 'help' we gave him, he's not coming to the party for us!

...if your reading in ZK, what ray said, $1500 ea (or less) and i'll buy 2, ray'll have 1 and I know someone else who wants 1....or maybe a trip is on the horizon for me after all!

>acer/asus?? well if u buy local from a reputable store - should not be too bad.....
