138604 2003-04-24 10:02:00 In march requested help re adding hard drive suggested I alter os setting to mobile? have been unable to find any reference via help screens re OS.
My current thinking is to fit the 2nd hard drive in a removable tray as a slave and fix the existing hard Drive and CDRom letters?? so when it is removed the system does not readjust CDR and partition letters on the 1st Hard drive. There is a removable storage feature under services/ computer management/ . My principle reason is so I can have a complete backup using the Auto/ or manual feature but not left in the PC. There is a dismount function as well that may handle this type of use. Would I save different backups to a different directory or set the 2nd Hard Drive up with say 4 portitions and rotate round them? Any help would be appreciated.

138605 2003-04-24 11:00:00 Hi,

What I'm thinking, is that you want to be able to use an a removable IDE Removable Drive Bay into your PC without Windows changing any of the letters from your current existing devices?

I'm sure Auto Detection or Cable Select should do the trick, depending which is your Master and Slave.. (If i needed to be corrected)

If you do decide to partition your 2nd Hard Drive, windows will automatically change the drive letters for any existing logical drives within your partitions to whatever letters are available. Sometimes this method can be really confusing if you do upon take up this method...

I just consider in one partition for your back ups and thus only one drive letter you need to know........

138606 2003-04-24 19:31:00 Just on a side note:

The allocation method i have noticed thus far is

primary1 drive1, primary2 drive1, primary1 drive2, primary2 drive2, and then following this the extended partitions

it has like its own priority que based on drive and type/order

first primary comes first then the drive then second primary, extended drive1, extended drive2 etc etc

note: on pre 2k [or maybe even nt4 not sure] there is a limit of one primary and one extended for the ms range afaik

on 2k/xp possibly nt4 you can have 4 units comprising of upto 4 primary 0 extended or 3 primary and 1 extended maximum

note that when using older systems in say dual booting or similair they in all probability wont recognise the additional primary partitions

now i would also like to note that windows in 2k/xp i have noticed can manage a special que not apparent in old versions in that it adds new volumes to the end, perhaps to prevent drive letter stuff ups where a file or folder which was previously referenced becomes missing. Note that this does not apply in 9x from my experience although i do not have an exact compiled list and at 6am + without incentives to do so i think i'll just state it as a consideration than an exact fix
