| 138447 | 2003-04-24 05:04:00 | Also another questions (ok this might seem a silly questions :8}) Why would you want a: ADSL Dual Interface Modem/Router/Firewall Or a ADSL Dual Interface Modem/Router/Firewall/Switch Ok, I see the point if your running a some sort of server but just for home users??????? & If you have more then one computer why dont you just network then together with a ADSL internal modem & use ICS instead of using a ADSL external Modem as a Router/switch Also what is the point of having a Router & switch in one modem??? Part from if you are running some sort of server Also on of the modems said "Streaming Video" & the other it does not say that????? Sorry if that semen a sill questions bit like I sad I dont see the point Note: I am NOT a newbe to computer (I have had my computer for +4 years) or the Internet I am just not too sure what they mean by those thing or what they do :) |

With internal ADSL, the PC fitted with the modem must be on before any of the networked PCs can get web access. With an ethernet connected ADSL router, the connection is on 24/7 and any PC can access the internet, irrespective of the others being powered up or not. Using a router with Network Address Translation (NAT) means that you have an effective firewall, anyone trying to access the system from outside will only see the router, and not the PCs behind it. > Also what is the point of having a Router & switch in > one modem??? Part from if you are running some sort > of server If you have an ADSL router only, then you need a hub or switch, to connect the other PCs. If more than 2 PCs you need a switch anyway, so building it into the router is a good idea. I have a hub, which connects 3 PCs, 1 printer and 1 ADSL router. I already had the hub, otherwise I would have bought the combo. I cannot understand your "server" comments. If you ever need proof that a router is worthwhile, try setting up ICS and internal modems, compared to an external router. Its a matter of installing the ethernet port and its away. My router also allocates the IP addresses on the network automatically. |
