138345 2003-04-24 03:30:00 I have been meaning to post about this problem for a while. I am running XP Home with 3 seperate user accounts. Somehow I managed to make it so that the two other accounts could not access any folders/files from my account. Then I forgot how I did it. And now I want to turn it off. Help. Thanks. promethius (1998)
138346 2003-04-24 03:34:00 Try start-settings-control panel- user accounts and under the heading Learning about choose user settings. Should guide you from there and stimulate those brain cells. Pheonix (280)
138347 2003-04-24 04:34:00 Either give the users administrative access which may not be a good option, or alternatively right click the folder you want to re-allow access to, select properties, then the security tab, and change the permissions.. and then propagate them to all the subfolders. whiskeytangofoxtrot (438)
138348 2003-04-24 04:42:00 "... not a good option .... Right.

It is NEVER a "fix" to a security problem to give adminstrator privilege to anyone. It is a security problem to do that. No-one should ever use an administrator account to do ordinary work.

138349 2003-04-24 04:47:00 ...hmmm all the other accounts are administrators. Still can't find it. I'm not worried about security as this is a stand alone home pc. promethius (1998)
138350 2003-04-24 05:45:00 Read the thread... home PC, security is hardly a major problem... you cut your A+ Cert off a Weet-Bix box and become a computer security expert?

Security is always a prime concern but not in this instance...

138351 2003-04-24 06:01:00 I read it, WTF. What's an A+ Cert? I just rely on over 30 years experience.

Even a home standalone system which has a number of users, all with adminstrator privilege, is an unreliable system. It's too easy for them to make changes. People make "mistakes". If they make mistakes with full privilege, they make severe errors. And noone knows who did it, or what it was. :_|

I don't log in as root on my home system. When something I'm doing needs more privilege I use the privileged status.. For that one thing.

Security is always a prime concern. In every instance. Security involves preventing damage to the system from the legal users, as much as any potential external threat.

A secure computer tends to continue to work.

138352 2003-04-24 06:42:00 ...ok..umm back to my problem please... promethius (1998)
138353 2003-04-24 19:52:00 First my own method would be try folder options and enabling non basic file sharing then set the permissions to the users.

according for this tidbit from micrsoft though they have another resolution that is recommended

138354 2003-04-25 05:11:00 I'm sure there is just a tick box somewhere?
