138654 2003-04-25 05:09:00 Yes you can but from my experience its best to backup everything you want from the 98 system, make a windows start up disk from 98, then fdisk the hard drive, format it & do a clean install. I've tried the upgrade & it was a nightmare. clearview (1550)
138655 2003-04-25 07:02:00 Most experiences of upgrades with XP have been fine... that said, back-up anyway, regardless of which way you decide to go.

If for some reason the install breaks, or the FAT --> NTFS conversion is halted you could lose the lot.

138656 2003-04-25 09:20:00 The one thing which is a must, is to run the compatability test. Then go and get all the XP drivers for modems etc....
Run the test from the XP CD.

138658 2003-04-25 11:30:00 Just getting off the thread for a moment...does anyone have a spare copy of the Feb PC World CD?
I have tried downloading the SP1 for XP have it has resulted in many failed attempts....
It has cost me quite a bit of overtime costs from my ISP....
I am in Auckland.

Thanks

138661 2003-04-25 11:53:00 Yup upgrading from any version of Windows to XP, can cause a lot of probs. You'll most probably have more probs and crashes. I would just get rid of 98. XP CD's are bootable, so why fdisk the hdd? Just go into the BIOS and change the bootdisk to CD (if ya BIOS supports it). Save the settings. Chuck the XP CD in, and it'll ask you, if you wanna format in FAT or NTFS then install XP. Heaps quicker. And just be sure you have the speed and the ram for XP. Otherwise, it'll be as slow as a snail, and it'll take forever to load XP or move in XP, after you install it! Spacemannz (808)
