138509 2003-04-24 08:43:00 I am currently running a P4 machine witha 40GB Hard-drive and Windows XP Pro.
As I am running out of space on that drive I am going to purchase a 2nd hard drive (60 or 80GB).
My question is will/can I install a different O/S on that hard drive (eg: Linux or Win98SE)?
Does this lead to dual boot issues when I turn my computer on?
Any other general advice.

Thanks and Much Appreciated

you will have to make a boot.ini (realy ezy) if you install windows
this will give you the option of one of 2 OSs
p.s diferant windows have dif boot.inis

linux automaticly puts it in for you so you don't have to wory about making another file

138511 2003-04-24 19:39:00 There is considerations regarding this .

Some operating systems have incompatible file systems and may not comply to booting off of boot . ini

For example: linux may install a custom boot loader, such as LILO or GRUB, although it varies . And due to this affecting the MBR [Master boot Record] of the boot drive it is possible that if something goes wrong the system may become unusable .

You at this could point could try to use that relevant operating systems option to repair the boot menu and relevant insallation, which will vary based on the large variation of operating systems out there .

To restore XP after such a boot configuration change there is two commands you would typically use:

fixmbr [to repair the boot record]
fixboot [to repair the boot . ini entries for applications which reference loading with the boot . ini file [not all do]]

you may wonder: well how the how do i do that if i can't get in to type the command?

1 . Try booting from the xp cd and choose Install > recovery console - where you can type the command

2 . boot off the floppy disk sets you can make from the cd or download of say www . download . com
