138316 2003-04-24 03:07:00 i am running windows xp and would love to know how to remove past/inactive notification items from my taskbar when i am customising it(other than always hide/hide when inactive)....i have this long list of past programmes/events that is annoying to see( i dont want to change the behaviour of these things- i want rid of them)...i have looked everywhere for a solution to this -any assistance is welcome tanetoa (3665)
138317 2003-04-24 03:28:00 Most programs have a "start with windows" box which you can untick. Otherwise go Start-Run and type in msconfig You can untick things in the startup. Pheonix (280)
138318 2003-04-24 06:19:00 thank u for info-but none of these items appear anywhere except when looking at past notifaication items when customising taskbar- there is a whole history list of them there...they are all programmes i have installed + even things like faxes sent...and left behind in here is a description and folder after they have all been uninstalled or removed from my pc...so i still none the wiser-yet!! tanetoa (3665)
138319 2003-04-24 07:24:00 I don't know if there is an easier way, but you can find a registry hack to fix this here: Registry Edits for Windows XP (www.kellys-korner-xp.com). Scroll down until you see item #53. Right click on the link and select "save target as". You will end up with a .reg file.

Please take note of the instructions and disclaimer on the site.

It would also be best to backup your registry before running this registry edit.

This is what the reg file contains:

"Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify]
"PastIconsStream"=-
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify]
"IconStreams"=-

138320 2003-04-24 22:17:00 I've just tried that on mine Jen (as mine is cluttered too) and it's no different, so maybe something else changed somewhere or maybe nothing...?! Trev0 (1995)
138321 2003-04-24 23:14:00 I followed instructions and it worked fine for me however there was an extra step added .

I opened regedit (then backed up of course)
Navigated to the files in Jen's post .
Deleted both items .
Closed regedit .
Opened task manager / clicked on Processes tab / highlighted explorer . exe and clicked 'end process' .
Click on file (in task manager) and then new . Type explorer then OK .
Exit out and restart computer (for good measure) and Presto, Past Items all gone .

138324 2003-04-25 02:22:00 strange it didn't work for you. I assume you are in Admin mode.

Try this (www.winguides.com) link as that is what I followed.
