| 138962 | 2003-04-26 03:50:00 | Hi. Over the past few weeks, i've been using task manager in windows XP (pro i'm on) to track my internet utilization. ANd, over the time, i've relised, tht only about 50-60% off my bandwidth is been fully utilized. on a typical day - browsing the net - with about 4 IE windows open, only about 50% is been utilized - with teh highest i've ever seen in 86%. I live in a rural area - and get connect at about 40-45kbs, with a download speed of about 1.7KBs - this is downloading a file by itself. I'm not really worried about the speed, its just that only about 60% of my net bandwidth is been used. Could someone please tell me why? and is there a way to get it up higher? like 90%?? Cheers o - also, if i leave my pc downloading a file - and i'm not broswing net or anything - i still only get like 60% utilization at about 2kbs. |

| 138963 | 2003-04-26 03:59:00 | If you can read faster, you will get more pages, and use more bandwidth :D If you learn to type faster, you will use more bandwidth. ;-) However, if everyone "improves their efficiency" in this way, the Internet will come to a halt. It works because people don't use all the bandwidth they are "entitled" to. Some servers would slow down under the extra load, too. The telephone system worked for many years on the assumption that no more than about 10% of phones would be in use at any time. If something exceptional happened (earthquake, dial-in competition on radio) the system would grind to a halt. |

| 138965 | 2003-04-26 06:14:00 | oh, ok. thanks for tht. so it'll always be around 60%, and this is just normal then. My ISP is paradise (I've never had any probs with them). I always connect at about 40-45kbs. BUT, this is because i connect thro an extension cord, and a multiplug at the phone socket - without these 2 things, i get about 40-50kbs. yeah, my normal downoad speeds are around 2kbs (tho not much higher). However, i'm downloading a file now at 3kbs!! which is really could for me. cheers |
