138869 2003-04-25 11:57:00 I have been using IE6 & OE6 on Win98SE, for some time, without any problems. But I've been notified to install some recent critical updates for both.

When trying to do that, I was informed to first install SP1. So I tried, but the downloads of SP1, being 17 or 11MB, were pathetically slow, even with my satellite connection.

I'd be glad to have your advice, if I really need this stuff, as I dont have any problems as yet. Cross the fingers.

Thanks..

138870 2003-04-25 12:03:00 Check on the cover disks of Computer magazines, some of them have included the SP1 for IE6. It will save you the download.

138871 2003-04-25 12:31:00 e.g.: NZ Net Guide & PC World etc....

Or if some one can find me the whole exe file I can put in up on my fast host & you can download it from there :).

138872 2003-04-25 12:34:00 I thought SP1 was for XP only.

138873 2003-04-25 12:38:00 Great thanks Jen & Stu, I realise that I can get it from those sources.

But my question is: Do I really need it ?

Well, Sam good question..The info I received insisted I should install IE6 SP1 before any other critical updates on my Win98SE system..

That can be confusing :-). XP does have a SP1 and there is also a SP1 for Internet Explorer 6.

138875 2003-04-25 12:47:00 OK, Jen, I thought I had made it clear, with my subject, that I was asking about the SP1 for IE6. I made no mention of WinXP.. Bazza (407)

Yes, your subject is quite clear. My post was in reply to Sam's comment re XP and SP1, hence the included quoted comment. Sorry if that annoyed you.

138877 2003-04-25 12:54:00 My usual answer in these cases is:-

"If it isn't broken then don't fix it."

Assuming you run a decent firewall like ZoneAlarm, NIS etc and a virus checker like AVG6 or Nortons then why worry.

There seem to be heaps of people trying to find ways to beat the
security then go on the 'Net saying that Winxxx or Linux or whatever
is vulnerable to some sort of attack. Maybe so but just how many people
know how to exploit the security problem?

138878 2003-04-25 13:04:00 Thanks Elephant: As it's not broke, I wont fix it, for now.

And Jen, I'm not at all annoyed, yes you responded to Sam's comment, so fair enough..

best wishes to all..
