2003-04-25 10:33:00 | I have an old PC Direct Discovery 550 computer which I bought years ago. It is a Pentium S 133mhz computer, with 64mb RAM (came with 32, but I upgraded), a 2gb hard drive, a 24x CD ROM drive (also upgraded from the original), PCI video card, Yamaha sound card, D-Link modem, D-Link network card. I have had problems for the last few years, and have had not luck fixing it. Even after a clean install of Windows (I have tried 95, and 98SE), several days or weeks later a registry problem pops up. It forces me to restart to restore the backup. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but mostly for a year, it had the registry problem every day. At the time I could not reinstall Windows as I did not have any way to back up my data, so I just had to put up with it. Every day I just tried letting it reboot to see if it would help, but it didn't. It caused some programs to not function at all. When I eventually did a clean install, the problem came back within about a month. Then I reinstalled again, and it came back in about the same period of time. I decided to install Win98SE in order to set up a network to my new computer. The problem came back in about a month or so, but because Win98SE, I couldn't boot up at all, because every time I turned the computer on, the error said that I had to restart in order to restore the backups of the registry. The problem was that there was problems with the backups, so I couldn't actually get into windows. Finally I just reinstalled Windows on a partitioned hard drive, and created a drive image of a "working" installation of Windows, and restored it every time windows came up with the Registry problem error. Ok... enough background info. Basically I've spoken to two computer technicians, explaining the circumstances, and they both believe it's a hardware problem. I can't think of any idea on how to fix it though, as the problem seems too broad. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any ideas/help, and sorry for the long post.

2003-04-25 12:57:00 | At this stage its too hard to say whether its sw, hw or otherwise for me. You could argue that it may be hardware because the software was reloaded, but that doesnt guarantee its software which is reliable or different. Could you please provide the exact error messages you get. And not if you dont have an exact error message dont expect an exact answer as its like telling a mechanic my car wont start or similair: there is a huge range of potential problems. And let me recommend that to anyone.... write down error messages exactly and how they occur. If you do have the exact error message and you want some extra help drop me a email on admin@captive.co.nz

2003-04-25 20:35:00 | Somebody, Sounds like a problem with your bios to me - and probably the only way to solve it is to get a new motherboard :( Had pretty much the same problem about a year ago, however the symptoms developed VERY quickly - sent board to technicians, and they took 2 weeks to send it back saying there's nothing wrong with it (surprise surprise!), so I spent the next three weeks documenting the problems and sent it back telling them it was a bios problem (over time it developed and eventually I was getting occasionaly BIOS error messages), and they replaced the motherboard (luckily still under warranty) and the problems went away. | 138885 | 2003-04-25 21:52:00 | Thanks Mike and Captive . I can't be very specific, as the error message is the standard windows' Win95 - "Windows encountered an error accessing the Registry . . . . and needs to restart . Click Restart" Win98SE - "Windows Registry Checker . Windows encountered an error . . . . and needs to restart . " Or messages to that effect - I've gotten so used to them I don't actually pay attention to what they say - word for word . I have tried Windows 95 and Windows98SE . I tried Linux - but it wouldn't finish installing, which I eventually found out was a non-compatible CD ROM drive . I haven't started getting BIOS error messages yet (only low-battery ones, which I replaced the battery, and they went away) . I seems to be that since I replaced the RAM (from the original 32mb to 64mb) the problems don't seem to be as often, or as bad . I ran a program called AIDA32 today (a sysinfo software), and it said it could not find any L2 cache in my CPU (Pentium S 133) . I don't know if this is normal . Once again, Thanks for your help Captive and Mike, and thanks in advance for any other help . | 138886 | 2003-04-25 21:54:00 | Also, I forgot to mention that this is a clean reinstall of Windows, which I did on Thursday, as the particular computer was infected with the W32.Opasrv Worm (and I couldn't get rid of it). | somebody (208) | |
2003-04-26 00:15:00 | Your problem is most likely to be caused by faulty memory. Second on the hit list is your harddrive/controller/cable. | BIFF (1) | |
2003-04-26 04:08:00 | Ok. Thanks BIFF. I'll just survive with the problem for now (no point replacing the parts). I've already gone through 2 monitors with that computer... so it's probably an indication that it's nearing the end of its life. CD ROM drive is slowly dieing as well.

2003-04-26 04:58:00 | I might read this a bit more later, i am just quickly catching up before i do some work. I would like to note this though: if you suspect a faulty component get the necessary material to test it e.g. for memory or otherwise. This applies as a whole if you suspect the possibility of hardware problems and i actually have slowly been compiling a list of tools for such purposes. This helps narrow down where the problem may be.

2003-04-26 05:14:00 | Hi Somebody. A look at your systems specs and settings, prima facie makes me think the hard drive/s are the possible problems. The registry is held at the start of a hard drive, if there is corruption around that area you could get problems, I see you have the drive split into two 1GB drives and then a spare 200MB drive. For testings sake see if you can get windows onto the 200MB drive, you will have to do an install with nothing else but the core operating system, then run this bare bones system for a week and see how she goes, if you need to work on on file call them up from the other drives. Install your programmes on the other drives as well. Your swap drive will have to be on one of your GB drives as well. If this ends up fixing the problem then you know its caused by your hard drive. BUT before you go ahead and do that, do a thorough scandisk on your drives and make sure that no bad sectors a popping up, especially around the start and end of your drive.

2003-04-26 09:51:00 | Thanks roofus. I'll run scandisk tomorrow and see. I might leave the current installation for a few weeks and see what happens. It seems to be less problem-prone so far compared to other installations I've done. | somebody (208) | |
