138900 2003-04-25 20:23:00 I run my PC, winME(windows updated), GeForce2(latest drivers) at 1152x864 but have random problems on startup where the resoultion is reset to 800x600. This has been happening about once every 4 startups or so with no change to system configuration/installed programs in between.

I'm baffled what's happening and causing the OS to forget it's setting and am a little tired of resetting the resolution after startup to what I want.

Anyone come across this sort of behaviour before or can suggest something to try?

Cheers

Chris.

138901 2003-04-25 20:46:00 I should add that I originally thought it was an IRQ conflict so changed the PCI cards around with no effect.

138902 2003-04-26 21:14:00 Guess I should feel privileged that I've managed to stump the PC community here at PressF1 !

PC did it again this morning. I presume the resolution is set by a config/ini file somewhere? before any other startup apps launch? Can someone set me right on this...

System is a P3-866MHz, 512Mb SD-RAM, GeForce2 Pro AGP, running WinME.

138903 2003-04-26 22:56:00 When it happens, have you previously been playing a game that required the resolution to be set to the lower value? Some games do this for you and you may not have noticed that it happened. Susan B (19)
138904 2003-04-28 00:32:00 Hi Susan,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately my PC sees little game time these days (mostly work...) so no I haven't been running a game.

It's going fine @ the res I want and then I shutdown, start the next day and I get 800x600 - not the res I used the day before. I'm they only one using it, so no-one else could have run a game or changed the res... unless the cat... na, not possible :)

Some more tech details if they are useful...

VIA Tech Apollo Pro 133 motherboard, P3-866Mhz, 512Mb SD-RAM
NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS 32Mb AGP, running nVidia drivers v43.45
GeForce2 IRQ is 10, sharing with "ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering" (after moving the card to stop a third share)
Viewsonic 17GA monitor and WinME OS - windows updated

I updated to DirectX 9 yesterday and have had 3 starts that are sweet since then... Could that be the solution?... fingers crossed!!!

If anyone can advise where the res settings are stored (registry, ini/bat file) and when they are recalled in the boot sequence that would be appreciated. Also, what is actualy doing the setting - presumably it's the OS that set's the res before fully powering up?

Cheers,

Chris.

138905 2003-04-28 01:58:00 what about checking what starts at start up? Trev0 (1995)
138906 2003-04-28 06:56:00 My first port of call would be disabling any Nvida software that loads at startup, this could be resetting your display to 800x600 (just a guess)
use "msconfig" to stop this

138907 2003-04-28 07:06:00 I would make sure that your PC knows what it's monitor and graphics cards are.. I've had problems like this when the PC didn't know what the monitor was and therefore gave me resolutions I didn't want...

Start > Settings > Display
Click on the "Settings" tab
Click Advanced
Click on the "Monitor" Tab
It should say a monitor - make sure that this is the correct monitor. If it isn't, then click change, and then change it. The same goes for the graphics card, however I would say that would be okay.

138908 2003-04-28 07:57:00 Do what cyberchuck recommends but also do it in safe mode as you may have more than one device also listed under either the display device or monitor. Worth a check as well. Pheonix (280)
138909 2003-04-29 04:33:00 Thanks for all those who replied :)

I haven't tried safe mode as I need the config and ini files porcessed to see the resolution it sets. I thought safe mode by default went to 800x600 (or worse) with about 3 colours!?

Anyway, after uninstalling all the nVidia drivers, reinstalling v43.45, messing around with the driver settings for the card (including disabling the nVidia desktop manager and media setting), checking the monitor and card properties and installing DirectX9, it seems to be ok... ooooh, the kiss of death I know! Unfortunately, since I'd made so many changes I'm not 100% sure what may have fixed it.

Have now had about 10 good starts, so will wait hope and see.

Thanks again for your advice.
