138843 2003-04-25 09:09:00 OK, we have had the Essential Applications ( . pcworld . co . nz/thread . jsp?forum=1&thread=33941&message=153026" target="_blank">pressf1 . pcworld . co . nz) survey, time now for the Necessary or Useful Applications . :-)

List as many as you like as long as they are apps that you use reasonably regularly . It will be good to make a FAQ out of the results so once again please give a few details of what the app does and an idea of how much it costs if possible .

Please do not post the same apps that you already listed in the Essential Apps thread .

A few of mine are:

Spybot - scans, detects and removes spyware nasties . Free .

AdAware - scans, detects and removes spyware nasties - complements Spybot . Free .

RegCleaner - registry cleaner and jv16 Power Tools repair tool . Free .

Outpost - firewall - used to use before Kerio . Free .

WinAmp 280 - another audio player for when I feel like a change from FooBar . :D Free .

MailWasher - delete your spam before it hits your Inbox- don't really need it but it is handy for the Hotmail account . Free .

TweakUI for Win XP - handy for tweaking without climbing into the Registry .

CDex - CD ripper to compile a collection of music to play with FooBar on the PC .

CD Wave Editor - used this nice little program to record music tapes . Really easy to record whole tape at once then split into separate tracks . Shareware (forgotten price) .

RenameIt - renames lots of files at once . Handy for songs and/or graphics (digital pics) .

PushPin - keeps a window on top where you need it . Free .

Acrobat Reader - to read all those manuals and . pdf documents . Free .

Norton Ghost - sounds like a good idea but have not yet got it working on the Win 98 PC . Give me time . . . . :p :D

MS Office Small Business Edition - for my work .

MS Money - good for keeping track of my PC savings budget . :D

Nero - CD burning app, very easy to use . Came with my CD writer .

KazaaLite - P2P file sharing program .

That will do for now . Let's see what others have . :-)

Bugger . I got the heading wrong . It was supposed to be Useful Applications, not Essential Apps because like you say we had that last week .

This one is supposed to be for the ones that we install at our leisure, not immediately after a reformat . And you can list as many as you like . :-)

138850 2003-04-25 12:19:00 OK, useful applications:

Most of my favourites have already been mentioned here, but some others are;

End it all: Look on Google for this.. fantastic program to close all running applications before doing a scan or defrag, so they run & finish alright.

clip cache: this & some others you can find on Google, allow you to save multiple clips to the clipboard, compared with the MS clip that only allows one clip.
