139344 2003-04-27 07:35:00 I have a 2-person network with the main computer (connected to a dial-up connection) running windows XP pro, and the other running windows 98 se. How can I block certain sites? minchjp (3682)
139345 2003-04-27 07:45:00 How are you sharing the internet connection?? Using ICS or a proxy server??
You can ask your ISP if they have any content filtering available on their server, otherwise, if you are using ICS then put a HOSTS file on the main PC and tell the client that the main PC is the Primary DNS Server, and point the Secondary DNS Server to a non-existant computer. That way all internet traffic goes through the Main PC, and as that has the HOSTS file on it, any unwanted content get's blocked.
As for getting the HOSTS file, I'm not too sure what content this has, but Search for "Spybot Search and Destroy" on Google, and in the advanced settings, select to use Spybots HOSTS file which blocks ad sites and a few others...

139346 2003-04-27 07:52:00 Chuck has covered what I was going to suggest, however slightly differently.

I was just going to suggest locating the HOSTS file on the PC you want to restrict access on.

Point any sites you want to restrict access to to another website:

i.e.

www.randompornsite.com --> www.disney.com

or point them to the machines localhost

www.randompornsite.com --> 127.0.0.1

Probably the quickest and most efficient for blocking a particular list of sites.

139347 2003-04-28 06:01:00 My network is just a standard 2-computer network, which i created using the network setup wizzard. I have tried the HOSTS file, but it hasn't worked (do you need to restart windows?). Thanks minchjp (3682)
139348 2003-04-28 06:22:00 Do a Find for a file called "hosts.sam". That is a sample provided by MS. Edit it, and Save As "Hosts" in the same directory. entries like0.0.0.0 www.base.site is what you use, I think. You might need to restart, because a hosts file is probably cached. Graham L (2)

139350 2003-04-28 09:36:00 www.beemerworld.com - even has a HOSTS file fulled with ad urls that you can use! No more popups or Website advertising! :D cyberchuck (173)
