| 139170 | 2003-04-26 22:26:00 | Hello, I am looking at purchasing a new 19" CRT monitor or 17" LCD monitor, and would like to look in preference at the LCD monitors. The CRT monitor I am looking at is the Philips 109P40 19" and the LCD monitor is the Hitachi CML175SXWB 17". I am unsure at this stage whether I should look at the LCD monitors yet or not. My main use would be "Cad" (I use AutoCad for work - main use), Graphics work with programs like "Paint Shop Pro" and "Caligari Truespace" (Truespace is an excellent 3D and animation package). I don't really play games, but who knows in the future when Doom 3 is out. Also in the near future I wish to look at purchasing a digital video camera and play around with video editing. Can anyone help me with advice at which way I should go at this stage, through personal experience or information they have seen. Thanks for any help, Dave |

They also don't need as much of the "3D" use which games have - in that case, CRTs are generally better. Most LCD screens aren't too good for gaming however, but they are improving. I don't really know what I'm talking about - just passing on info read in PC World and other magazines. |

| 139173 | 2003-04-26 23:44:00 | I have a ViewSonic VE510+ LCD monitor, and I do a bit of gaming, and I don't have any problems with the clarity of the picture in games... In fact, i think its better than using my old CRT monitor...but maybe that's just me :D |

| 139174 | 2003-04-27 00:01:00 | I have LCD monitors (3 types HP, Viewsonic and Philips) and find that the viewing qualities are better than any CRT I have used (and that included top end CAD stations) Simply put, I would never go back to an LCD. Just watch the quality though you get what you pay for. The recent magazine article referred to would be worth a read first. |

| 139176 | 2003-04-27 00:47:00 | LCD displays can be a problem if you wish to operate a video mode other than the 'native pixel count' of the display. e.g. if the display was designed for 1280 x 1024 and you needed to display 1024 x 768, you can either get a "cropped" picture with black guard bands - effectively only using a smaller area of the display, OR the picture may be 'resized' to the full display area, with considerable distortion. If your selected display resolution is an exact submultiple of the 'native pixel count', then the display is usually OK. Just one of the "downsides" to 'LCD' displays :| |

E.ric, Yes I do get PC World and have read the articles, but I see nothing wrong with still asking others for their opinions and whether they have had experience with particular items under particular situations. The comment of native pixel count is correct, at 640 x 480 its not very good, at 1024 x 768 its great. Clearview under XP works a treat also |
