139279 2003-04-27 05:57:00 I agree with JohnH. I have the Dynalink RTA300 Router as well, and have had no troubles with it so far. Works great.

I got it for about $340 incl GST from Starlyte computers. There are better deals around on pricespy, but the service of those retailers is shocking. I reckon its better to have better service and pay a few more bucks than waste time messing with them.

The only thing I can say about the dynalink RTA300 is that its firewall is pretty hard to configure. It could take many many hours to get that sorted out for everything you might need it for. For one you have to set up everything manually or have their settings, you can't add additional pinholes to the preconfigured settings to save some time. For example, kazaa wont work on any of the pre configured settings etc so to get a firewall you would be spending a very long time entering in Ip addresses, and ports.

JohnH ...did you set up your firewall on the router at all? If so tell me how you did it. ;)

A dynalink 330? where the heck did you get one of them from? Is that a typo or the very very latest one out...?

I did try, but ended up falling back exhausted and confused. As I had no need to do anything special like configure for kazaalite, I just tested my computer on several websites for security, and then when I was satisfied, I left it alone!

Sorry I can't help, it all seemed too much for me and my level of skill. As long as my PC was closed to the world I was happy! I can access the main PC from my laptop via either network cable connection or WLAN, so I am happy!

139281 2003-04-27 06:49:00 Do you still use Zonealarm with ADSL.

139282 2003-04-27 07:01:00 More useful with ADSL than anything else...

I basically think ZoneAlarm causes way too many problems, and on Dial-Up is virtually a waste of time due to the changing IP address every time you dial in - the chances of anyone spending enough time on a dial-up IP to be hacked, and the chance of a hacker even bothering to try on dial-up is negligible.

People are far too excited about installing ZoneAlarm for security and then having no idea how it works, or how to configure it, then either waste the times of ISP helpdesks trying to learn, or uninstall it with all the traffic blocked off and breaking their TCP/IP stacks.

But thats another rant altogether..

Yes, have a firewall on DSL, know how to use it, and choose something reliable and unobtrusive.

I swear by them, I have heard good things about the Dynalink ones mentioned above, however I have also heard that the software on them crashed somewhat frequently requiring power-cycling to get them up again - however this may have been fixed.

I have an external D-link DSL-504 ADSL Router which I am very happy with. You can have up to four computers connected. You can check out the details here (www.dlink.co.nz)

139286 2003-04-27 08:52:00 There is another point not mentioned yet, and that is having a router with the ability to be able to forward a range of ports as well as individual ones.

I have the RTA220 Dynalink and although individual ports can be forwarded, or in their terminology, create virtual servers, a range of ports cannot. This affects communications programs like ICQ, NetMeeting etc.

Although it works well with no problems other than those mentioned, and was very easy to set up, with hindsight and more experience now, I'd probably go for one with port range forwarding.

139287 2003-04-27 08:56:00 4 wot it is worth, I still use Sygate Personal Firewall, which I prefer to Zone Alarm. I think the router firewall stops things coming in, but the software firewall stops things going out too, if you don't want them to.

I think that must have related to another model. There has been nothing like this to my knowledge with the model we are talking about (RTA300)

If you check out the Dynalink website you will find that there is an alert about one model, and that has been fixed. Perhaps you are thinking of that or a Dlink modem?
