139598 2003-04-28 08:22:00 I can actually see a D: drive, but that is the CD drive. I should actually see a 10GB partition (mostly fill) with all my helpfull programs and files on it.

Recently I got a copy of YOPER, and installed it into 2 small partitions at the end of my disk. I set it to boot from floppy. When it came time to reboot, the trouble started. It would not boot back into windows (XP) and I forgot to set the boot order in the BIOS. I never got around to making a rescue disk -
EVERYONE MAKE A RESCUE DISK -
and so decided straight away to reformat the partition. I thought the idea of partitions was to ensure the safety of such data in just such circumstances.

Back to the problem, I cannot see the aforementioned partition when I explore the disk. The only way I have managed so far is through Computer Management (local) / Storage / Disk Management
I can see a healthy (unknown partition). But the only thing I can do is delete it.

If anyone has already managed to get themselves back from the position I am in, please help me. I would rather not delete that partition as well.

139600 2003-04-28 09:16:00 but it was stored on the partition
The disk to which it belongs is down in the murky depths of Middle Earth.
It is not the easiest to get back either.

139601 2003-04-28 09:48:00 I would be inclined to see if FDISK can have a go at it and maybe format it into a file system that Windows can read... Just be aware that working with FDISK is risky business, and when it formats a partition - it really "formats" the partition... You don't have files on there that you need saved do you??
Otherwise you could try using the PCW Disk that had knoppix on that and see if Knoppix can access the partitions... if it can, then maybe you could use Knoppix to format it into a Windows FileSystem Format??

139602 2003-04-29 00:50:00 I do know who to delete a partition. What I want to do is see the partition so I can rescue the files on it.
I do not want to format that disk and destroy all my work.
Windows can read the file system, its NTFS. You know the one that was designed for XP.

I would love to be able to right click on "start" and hit explore to see this "Other Stuff" partition of mine.
I am really beginning to doubt windows. After a shakey term with ME, I managed to install XP no problems. I played and I tweaked. I tested and trialed. I had managed to install 2 versions of Linux on the disk without serious illness. I put a copy of NZ's YOPER on and even though I told it to boot from floppy and not to install LILO, it seemed to destroy my MBR (or something along those lines). So I guess most of my anger should be poointing towards YOPER, right?
Wrong, I am still trying to find that Other partition with windows - the OS it was designed for.

139603 2003-04-29 05:43:00 [b]DON'T USE FDISK]/b]. It is a data killer.

XP has some repair options which include fixing the MBR. That should be your first stop. Can you still get into the Linux? If it actually installed lilo, it would have saved a copy of the MBR, and would restore it with "lilo -u".

When I tried to reformat the C: partition it would not do so because XP detected more than 2 partitions. Hence I had to erase the LINUX partition. I do not have LINUX installed anymore, and don't think that reinstalling will allow me to edit as required.
When I first reinstalled XP I could not see the D:OTHER Stuff partition, so I reinstalled it again.
And that is where I started this thread from.
I was never going to use FDISK. I want that data. I didn't need the data on C: and so I reformatted. I did not know that I would never see D: again. - in saying that, when I go amd look at this setting (sal.neoburn.net) I can see the drive. I can sense the drive. I can even smell the drive. But I cannot touch the drive. If I click on the properties nothing happens - for both partitions.

139605 2003-04-30 07:30:00 What about using Knoppix to see if that can access the drive?? ?:| cyberchuck (173)
139606 2003-04-30 07:36:00 I'm thinking along the same lines cyberchuck. Could be the partition has been converted to Linux file system. If this is true, you can still recover your info by copying it to C drive which has the windows system. Pheonix (280)

I can see it. However, I don't know what to do with it.
Actually, I'm sure I can't do anything with it, as knoppix is running from the CD, and can only see the drive. I'll have another go with it.
