139487 2003-04-28 03:57:00 I’m using a laplink Parallel cable and Direct Cable Connection, and have an old 486dx100 computer set up as host, with a PIII 556 set up as guest for file transfers from the old to the new, as per the “How To” article in PC World February 2000.
Everything appears to be kosher until I try to get the guest to connect to the host it. It says it is establishing a connection, then displays a dialogue box saying
"verifying user name and password".
Immediately afterwards a second dialogue box appears titled "User Logon". The first entry NAME already filled out, the second entry required is PASSWORD and is blank and the third entry is LOGON DOMAIN which is also blank
The sad thing is I have no idea what password it is looking for, what the log on domain is or anything else about it.
I have tried every thing I can think of in Networks / Passwords / etc but haven’t found the golden BB to kill this wretched thing.
Can someone pleeeeese tell me where this message is coming from and how to get rid of it.?
Thanks

139488 2003-04-28 04:06:00 What are the OSs on the two computers? If you have Windows 9x on the DX100, and a "more modern" version on the Pentium, they might have incompatible ideas about "domain"s/"workgroup"s. Graham L (2)
139489 2003-04-28 06:17:00 Hey
Whenever I've used DCC in the past - the LOGIN box has always given me troubles. First things - make sure both PC's are on the Same workgroup and do not have the same Name or IP - (IP addresses can be assigned via DHCP with DCC).
That done enable file sharing on the HOST PC
For Win9x and ME Machines this is:
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network
Click "File and Print Sharing"
Select "Allow other Users to access my files"
A reboot will be needed

Once the host has rebooted, make a folder for the files you want to share (it can be anywhere on the HOST machine) and move all the files there. Then on the folder, right click, click Properties, Click the Sharing Tab, and then click "Allow access to this folder". Click Apply and a hand should come up under the folder indicating it has been shared
Start up DCC and do not put a password on the DCC connection or anything, don't worry about sharing any folders over the connection - that's already been done.
Now, open DCC and try again. Use the Username and Password that has been logged in on the HOST machine to access it from the client machine. Should it say connection denied, invalid password, etc, just reconnect and don't type anything - just leave it be! and continue on

On the Host click Start > Run and type "WINIPCFG" (without the quote marks) and up pops a box! Make sure the connection selected is a Network one and an IP Address should be shown as something like 192.168.***.***
On the Client machine click Start > Run and type "COMMAND" (without the quote marks) and then type "PING 192.168.***.***" (replacing ***.*** with the actual numbers show in WINIPCFG - once more this is done without the quote marks)
If you get "REPLY FROM 192.168.***.***" that means the computers are talking (stressful stuff ain't it? :p)

From the, click Start > Run and type "\\[computername]" without the quote marks and replacing [computername] with the name of the Host computer... All working well a window should pop up and show you the shares on the Host computer! Just Copy and Paste :D
