139484 2003-04-28 02:16:00 Hi there,

am not sure if this subject has been bought up before, but is there any software you can buy, or download that is based on voice reconition without having to use the keyboard?. .And if so, is it reliable to use. Appreciate feedback on this.

139485 2003-04-28 03:44:00 Office XP has built in voice recognition.

Also available are Dragon Naturally Speaking, and IBM ViaVoice (I think?)

You need a good quality microphone, no background noise, and you could reasonably expect correct conversion in the +90% range.

The reason its not used widely in the commercial world, includes the fact that editing to correct the mistakes can take longer that a good typist typing the entire text, and the lack of a suitable quiet environment.

I have used Dragon, but gave up as the editing was slower than my hunt-and-peck typing anyway.

You need to spend a few hours training it to your voice beforehand.

139486 2003-04-28 04:39:00 HAL had a good speech interface. Unfortunately, it's a bit hard to talk after the computer has made you breath vacuum. :D

The Enterprise computer has less personality. I'd settle for a good holodeck.

The "real" versions are pretty much still in the "ready in two years" category. They've been there for about ten years. ;-)

There's a nice Dilbert cartoon about it: an obnoxious workmate is dictating loudly in his cubicle to the voice input programme, until Wally gets angry, walks up to him and says: "What happens if I say DELETE FILE?"
