139430 2003-04-27 11:52:00 i finally got my other pc together (made up of odds and ends) and install redhat8. i even pulled out the backup drive out of my main system but unfortunatly i seem to have bumped something as my main pc dosn't go anymore :(. it gives beeps (like ram error) and the cpu fan stops. not to sure if i've stuffed the ram or thechip set is fried(found the chipset fan had died).

hence i'm no doing this from linux for the first ever time. what a mission! now if only i can find where and what to put in to string the modem. i usually use +ms=v11 in windblows.

also i'll have to find an add blocker (sorry pcworld) for redhat.

hopefully i'll have the main pc up and running sometime this week otherwise i'm going to have one fast crash course in linux

139431 2003-04-27 12:31:00 hmmmm good stuff tweak'e well in a way. If I was in your position I think I know what I'd be doing.... and that wouldnt' be a crash course in linux. :-(

Good to see you've got some will power.

139432 2003-04-27 12:55:00 if you want a basic ad blocker, do a google search for HOSTS file editing whetu (237)
139433 2003-04-28 00:21:00 Okay, here's a real fast crash-course in Linux:
Go Phoenix - search google for 'Download Phoenix Nightly', as its IMHO the best cross-platform compatible browser. Just right-click on images you dont want seen and choose 'block images from this server' and you're peachy :-)

Next..

Its all cAsE SenStiVe, so remember that... try and stick to lower case, as you'll thank yourself for it later.

Dont forget to use:
su -
as that'll get you (in XTerm/mc or in Command line mode) into root, type exit and you're back to your user.

Use Ctrl + Alt + F1-5 to switch to different 'virtual consoles' I think the RedHat book called them...

/etc is where the configs are stored, so the file /etc/fstab is what file-systems it should mount...

/etc/samba/smb.conf is the samba file (I think i've been thru that with ya..)

Other than that, have fun... DONT root around... and you'll need to download the xmms mp3 plugin, just search google for an rpm :-)

Check Clueless's FTP as well for a few other things Ive uploaded like XFCE Window Manager... And Enjoy :-)

Half this you may know.. but its a crash-course for anybody else too.. :-)

Cheers

139434 2003-04-28 01:04:00 thx all :)

i have new parts on the way so i'm at mates typing this due to the linux will not run on the net without the modem being strung (did lastnights post with images turned off which helped a lot....bloody doubleclick was holding up the works with such a slow internet speed :( ). if someone knows where to type the string in, it would be handy.

yes i found the xmms mp3 plugin yesterday after tearing my hair out. almost threw the linux in the bin...fancy not having mp3 support as default.

redhat8 seems to run ok on the old pc (k6-2 500mhz 384meg ram onboard everything). fortunatly i had opera alreay downloaded and on disk :)

139435 2003-04-28 01:12:00 Run XFCE Window Manager then, It'll speed up life no end :D

kppp is KDE's dialer-config... Cant remember Gnomes.. Try pressing F1 and looking up modems?

139436 2003-04-28 01:13:00 BTW - They dont include MP3 support due to copyright issues :-)

Its easy enough to download the small as anything file and run it, so I dont really care :-)

Its same in RH 9 as welll :(
