139416 2003-04-27 10:45:00 talking about "Imesh" here - haven't used it for a while but tried to open it today and got this message "a required DLL file CD_CLINT.DLL was not found - ran a search, not found, tried a google search and downloaded a dummy file, same name, that apparently is adequate - still didn't open so dumped the whole lot and downloaded it anew - same thing happened with the new programme (i did run ad-aware-wonder if that made a difference?) - can someone help please? jayal (1291)
139417 2003-04-27 10:49:00 AdAware will have deleted the file, as it is an adware issue.

If you ran AdAware after the new download, then you have crippled the application. Even if its a dummy .dll the name is enough for AdAware to remove it.

139418 2003-04-27 23:50:00 thanks to godfather - will dump it and try again - but another question - if i reload and get that adware again, do i live with it? - seems (to me) i won't be able to clear adware without ruining, e.g. Imesh - your thoughts would be appreciated, thanks jayal (1291)
139419 2003-04-28 00:03:00 I am not sure why some people are so paranoid about adware, in all honesty.

As you suggest, in some cases its the price to pay for a free application.
If it's existence doesnt bother you, then leave it there? AdAware lists the files and allows you to choose which you delete.

You could check out the invasiveness (or lack of) that the particular adware presents, simply by looking it up in Google.

I use one package that contains adware, I know about it, it acts reasonably and I tolerate it because it would cost a lot of money to have an ad-free version.
AdAware gets run on this PC about twice a year, and I allow those applications to remain.

Personally i wont have it out of principal,if that means i miss out on there free program then fine.

Give them at inch, they take a mile.

Ive seen the massive havoc caused on many a pc where spyware and what-not is allowed to run unhindered.

Ah yes . . .
I work at a Cyber Cafe . . Left one PC without a Check on Ad-Adaware for 2 months (I meant to . . but whenever I remembered, the PC was in use) .

Scanned to find 431 references to spyware . . .

No wonder it crashed 2-3 times a day . .
Removed it all and it was fine . . cleaned up Add/Remove Programs . . And the PC's not crashed in the 3 months since then :-)

139422 2003-04-28 00:33:00 Thats a reasonable stand to take metla, what tends to annoy me are those that will not accept TINSTAAFL
(There Is No Such Thing As A Free Lunch) .

The adware in the program I use is polite and asks me if its OK to update its ad cache .

Eudora is another civilised program, if run in ad - sponsored mode .

I do not tolerate spyware as much as adware . If the functions are fully explained, overt and understood, then fine . If its covert then no .

I agree wholeheartedly with that.

Adware IMHO is fine... and updates of the ads, I can live with that provided its not killing my net connection...

Spyware... little different though... :-)

139424 2003-04-28 01:07:00 download this fake spyware from here (homepages.paradise.net.nz). its setup to install with win9x, with 2k/xp you will have to extract and put it in whereever you remove the spyware from. adaware normally dosn't detect the fake ver.

hope that helps :)
