2003-05-01 20:27:00 | It doesn't sound as if you don't have a CD-RW drive or a zip drive, Mike, because if you did, a backup would be so much easier before doing a reformat >and just use the machine, problem-free, for what I do but what about quicker?? Trev PS. how much room does your Temp file take up (scanner will tell you)

2003-05-06 21:07:00 | Dear Trev, Scanner says the \TEMP file is 2.4 Gigabytes! Mike PS Yes I can easily back up anything I like on my external 20 Gig Iomega HDD, but if I do reformat how does that get me painlessly through the agonies of re-installing Windows O/S and all my other programs and settings?

2003-05-07 05:27:00 | and have you deleted all the files yet? have you regained some space..? 5.3gbs would easily be enough I don't think reinstalling windows and re-doing all the settings etc sounds painless either!

2003-05-09 01:43:00 | I have now run Disk Cleanup in System Tools and used the Temp Internet files option to empty out that file. So far nothing has fallen over or complained and I have more empty space then used space on my 'C' drive. Hallelujah! Thanks folks I assume the strange files which have been left untouched (438 Mb) are deemed essential for the system??? Mike S

2003-05-09 22:44:00 | PC-cillin 2002 has a 33.3 Mb folder with sub-folders containing a number of items that on closer inspection from my inexperienced eye dont look particularly sinister. Seen individually though, as in a list in the Space Odyssey program, its hard to decide whether a file like hhupd.exe or Pcc7a.tsk or a folder like REB50A0.bap is threatening or benign. Since there are hundreds of files comprising the listing its difficult to know on what grounds to be suspicious. I can also see 83.3 Mb of files still in Internet Temporary Files, including a few Cookies, a number of *.gif s, some *.ico s and small html docs. I thought Id got rid of a mass of that sort of stuff, but it seems not. I have to (sheepishly, and belatedly) admit though the biggest piece of my TEMP content now comes from my Inbox.dbx! Since I now have half my C drive free as opposed to ¼ I do feel much happier though. I realise that I now need to get a proper system in place for this sort of task, as this time round I mixed tasks too much: I was evaluating new diagnostic and clean-up programs in parallel with various deletions, file manipulations, fighting minor bouts of terror and so on. In addition I lost focus because of the protracted nature of the task, and I see that a flow chart has to be high on my priorities now. Still the problems remain of being able to differentiate important files from junk and threatening ones from innocent; I suppose I rely on PC-cillin to do the latter though. Mike S

Unless you are an utter obsessive and keep track of every file on evey program, just use the programs suggested. They are not reccommended because they DON'T work. See FAQ 9a & b | Rod ger (316) | ||
