139675 2003-05-01 01:08:00 I'd just like to say thanks to all the folk who have provided so many ideas and programs to fiddle with.

I like 'Scanner' and 'Space Odyssey' v 2.0 looks very good, but other than the Windows\TEMP file (which I have yet to actaully raise the courage to truly clobber) I'm still petrified about deleting things and possible consequences. Time will tell!

139676 2003-05-01 01:31:00 be not afraid. (especially if you can backup your data)

I say take the step, wipe out that temp folder, its holding you back...

whats the worst that could happen? you get to start afresh ;-)

139677 2003-05-01 02:31:00 general the windows temp file is ok to delete. its a good thing to keep fairly empty.

one thing i havn't seen posted is how much free space you have left.
one of the more comman problems i get to see is people think that the more data on the drive the slower their pc will be. they then try to make more room by deleting things windows needs to run!

if you are really running out of room then start backing things up to cd's/zip such as mp3's, program install files, movies etc. uninstall programs you do not need and give the pc a general clean out (jv16 etc).

Umm, do not delete the Windows Temp folder itself, just the contents.

139679 2003-05-01 06:08:00 if you really wanted you could add these lines to autoexec.bat

echo y | del c:\windows\temp
md c:\windows\temp

This will empty the temp file every time you start up windows.

To edit autoexec.bat you'll need to find it. Its usually in c:\ (you may need to change your settings so you can see hidden files/folders). Next change it so its not 'read only', right click on it, select edit and copy and paste these two lines on a new line below the rest of the text.

i think this only works in win9x and 3.1 machines, i havn't tried 2k or XP

139680 2003-05-01 07:00:00 Re actual figures, and after I got a 'running out of room' message and I deleted some things by hand (from my list of significant size files), I have 6.44 Gb used and 2.90 Gb free.

139681 2003-05-01 07:32:00 don't worry about deleting all the files in the windows>temp file mike, they were created only to install new programs and to keep the settings of running progs (which will most likely reset themselves on start up again anyway), they (the files) really are just wasted space!
just go into windows/temp, goto edit (at the top) then 'select all' and then either click the cross on the taskbar or right click over one and choose 'delete'.

If you're overly concerned, clear your recycle bin before hand (so it's easier to determine what is deleted) and re start after deleting (as above) and if something doesn't go properly, then select all of the recycle bin and choose restore!

your running out of room message might be something else though as 2.9Gbs sounds like enough...

mmmm me too! And certain people have given me the itch to do another one very soon.... :D

139684 2003-05-01 19:54:00 Reformat sounds ghastly to me. That smacks of having to re-install Windows plus all the programs I have on the machine. You guys must be on a different planet to me - which I can accept you know!

All I want to do is delay buying a new drive, and just use the machine, problem-free, for what I do (day to day business).
