| 139747 | 2003-04-29 02:18:00 | well my main pc is now back up and running (with some nice new speeedy ram). well my thoughts on linux (redhat8) is its still got a fair way to go to beat windows. biggest problem for me was lack of organised help files, a modem i couldn't seem to string (which made internet a waste of time), no error messages when apps didn't work, and a werid "explorer" setup. type in a location on the hardrive and it tried to google search it ?:| however it may just come in handy as a games server on the lan :^O |

Agreed. > biggest problem for > me was lack of organised help files, Yes, its all there but isnt obvious where to find it. > a modem i > couldn't seem to string (which made internet a waste > of time), You have to do it in the internet dialer you are using. As with everything linux, there is more than one. > no error messages when apps didn't work, depends on the app. unfortunately a lot only print errors to the terminal so you don't see them if you didn't start it from one. > and a werid "explorer" setup. type in a location on > the hardrive and it tried to google search it ?:| Hmm. Doesn't do that for me. You weren't trying to enter DOS paths? > however it may just come in handy as a games server > on the lan :^O |

RedHat 9 has come even further . . . Its certainly getting there, its just that there is a majority of doze users, so the help-base is broader . . just ask a friend what to do in most cases coz most people have doze not linux :-) > > > biggest problem for > > me was lack of organised help files, > > Yes, its all there but isnt obvious where to find > it . | 139750 | 2003-04-29 04:17:00 | thx for that i will give it a try. unfortunatly the external modem i was useing is now back on the main pc and the modem in the linux box is a p.o.s onboard AMR modem :( so it may be even more fun ! as far as the google search, it shouldn't matter if it was the wrong path name, the "explorer" type app redhat uses should never try to access the net let alone do a google search each time i do a typo. after all thats what the internet browser is for! |

Well RH uses GNOME by default, so I assume you're talking about Nautilus. If you type the link to the filesystem wrong, I'm assuming it's calling up Galeon to ask it to find the site. This is fact doesn't make Nautilus a web browser, as its using Galeon to browse the web anyway through the use of a a plugin. Just a tip - pressing <tab > will complete the names of files/folders providing the folder/file exists and you have typed in enough imformation for it to complete the file name. This kinda helps to avoid typo's because <tab > won't work if there is no such file/folder. |
