140191 2003-04-29 23:15:00 I used M$ updates for the latest patches. Now I get an error when using OE6 saying neither SMTP or POP3 host servers can be found.

viz:

"The host 'smtp.paradise.net.nz' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'Paradise Mail', Server: 'smtp.paradise.net.nz', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D"

and the same for pop3.

I run WIN98SE on CELERON 433

IE and Mailwasher work OK.

Do the error messages point to something ??

140193 2003-04-30 00:40:00 what antivirus are you running? you may have to reset the antivirus email protection. tweak'e (174)
140194 2003-04-30 01:22:00 No the error message is just put there because a programmer got bored . - duh

This type of error is a problem that can occur with both several brands of firewalls and antivirus programs though there appears to be no common cause .

Of course the error message points to something - it is put there for a reason .
Search the MS knowledgebase for the suggested solution by Microsoft .

140195 2003-04-30 05:26:00 Thanx for the responses. Just a few notes to follow up.

POP3 works on Mailwasher OK so probably not ISP problem.

Certainly looks like something to do with antivirus. MS knowledgebase documents error code in #813514 as a problem with Norton Antivirus. I had changed to AVG a couple of months ago but discover now I left NAV also checking. However disabling e-mail checking in both has not fixed the problem.

I am going to uninstall/reinstall AVG and see if that makes a difference. I'd rather not play with NAV (I have an old version of Norton System Works )

Heres hoping !!

Are you running ZoneAlarm or similar??

Check your program access settings...

140197 2003-04-30 06:48:00 Tkx "WTF", Merlin's response suggested firewalls and is my next approach - reloaded AVG did not fix problem. (but did prove my recordkeeping is better then my memory.

I used to run Zonealarm but closed it down when it seemed to be more of a nuisance. I stopped in loading in MSCONFIG STARTUP list but otherwise it is still installed.

A program called Truevector is still running and I think I had problems when I tried to stop it. My geriatric memory can't recall all the details but I seem to remember there were warnings about deleting Zonealarm without some other maintenance as well. I presume Z'Alarm webpage will have something. Maybe some kind PF1er will have a reference.

Off for now - will check in later.

Thanks for all the suggestions but I still need to get to the solution. ?:|

140198 2003-04-30 07:32:00 Two more things to try
1/ Open OE and get into tools-options-connection and see that OE shares the same connection with IE, if using the same.
2/ Again in OE, go tools-accounts-mail and delete all. Then go ADD and set it up again.
Hope all goes well.

140199 2003-04-30 07:37:00 True Vector is part of ZoneAlarm - most of the uninstallation is covered www.zonelabs.com

Open ZoneAlarm, check the settings... I find more often than not, even with the program not running, ZoneAlarm settings will still be in force, preventing new programs and non-allowed programs from accessing...

Not sure exactly why this is but it is a repetitive problem I face almost daily at work...
