2003-05-01 08:11:00 | Hi Stumpey You might like to try this. In IE properties > Tools > Internet Options > Security tab > Custom Level button. Scroll down to User Authentication if Anonymous Logon is checked try one of the other options. If this doesn't work, no harm done, revert back. Depending on your settings and setup having Anonymous Logon selected can lock you out of accessing the net. HTH Murray P

2003-05-01 11:42:00 | It's been a long day. Worked through settings and all looked OK, (I had documented them well for a chnage so have accurate references. Deleted ZONEALARM but suspect I got a bit overzealous in following cleanup instructions. Whatever, the end result was OE6 worked (or appeared to) but IE did not - hence the silence from me on PF1. Called paradise help desk - spent 30 - 40 min trying things while help desk watched. Support was excellent, talked me through pinging while he monitored - all appeared to work but IE just kept timing out. Could log on through OE6, Mailwasher, & IE but nothing would connect up. Installed Mozilla and Netscape but still the same result. Finally penny dropped, this is not just a IE/OE problem so went back and reloaded Zonealarm. All OK now - except for checking through Zonealarm parameters again. AND DOCUMENTING the whole bit. Thanks to all for the suggestions and attention.

2003-05-02 08:58:00 | ZoneAlarm *rollseyes* imho a waste of time for most people, particularly those on dial-up. The program is plagued by problems - this is just another of the 100's of faults it causes every week... To be perfectly honest I think more time, money and effort is wasted in helpdesk man hours through ZoneAlarm than would ever be gained from it's "so-called" security provision to prevent "hackers"...

2003-05-02 12:42:00 | I completely agree with whiskeytangofoxtrot that a firewall is not necessary with a dialup connection and Zone Alarm in particular is consistently causing problems for people who do not have the knowledge or experience to understand how to configure it or to resolve the many problems it causes with blocked access to web or mail. What alternative? Don't use any firewall with a dialup connection unless you have considerable experience with computer systems and don't just install it because it is the trendy fashionable thing to do.

2003-05-02 13:36:00 | ADSL, shared on network W2k & W98 will add an occasional laptop soon . Had Agnitum Outpost F/wall and liked its configuration options . Sadly, when I upgraded from 98 to w2k pro with sp3 I found out that Outpost will not run (nor the network) with sp2 or above . Outpost was totally stuffed and had to be removed via regitry to put the system back and get rid of it all . I still like it am just waiting for an updated ver . In the meantime I,ve reluctantly (as I've seen so many posts re) tried ZA std ver but, you can't do much with compared to Outpost . I'm quite prepared to give it the heave but wanted peoples opinions/experience on alternatives . Apologies for hijack of your post stumpey . Cheers Murray P PS . I don't believe I've ever been hacked and don't think it is a big risk but I did have a trogen/worm infestation on the w98 comp that attacks networks and without the firewall may have been in more serious doo doo than I was :)

2003-05-02 23:35:00 | Murray: I have only quickly scanned your posts on ADSL so I am not sure if you have the same arrangement as Godfather or not, but he uses a router that has built-in firewall protection. If you do a search with Godfather's name as the username and some relevant keywords I am sure you will find his posts on this matter. If you do not have a similar setup to Godfather you could think about installing Smoothwall on an old computer for firewall protection.

2003-05-03 05:04:00 | Hi Susan Yes I do have a similar setup to Godfather my comp is stealthed or port closed from the outside world . The software firewall I want is not so much a requirement for protection from without but from within . eg, miscreant apps, spyware/dialers, trojans, etc . These can get in past a routers firewall because they aren't specifuically looking for your IP/comp, which they won't see but piggy back in or are welcomed in . I guess it depends on your level of paranoia . In my case I'm not so worried about the win98 machine (kids would be gutted if they lost homework) but my business win2k machine is another matter . When the 98 comp got infected by a trojan (son downloading software via KaZaa) I got a fright when I read the tech info on Trend's site re particular critter . At the time the w2k comp was sans a software firewall and this particular trojan attacks and distributes itself via networks (don't they all) . If it wasn't for Outpost running and setup correctly on the 98 comp I coulda been in deep trouble . As it was, by the time my son called me there were over 1300 instances of the virus on the comp and it was a real sod to kill it off . So, I feel a wee bit vulnerable without a softy as well as the routers firewall capabilities . Mind you, I don't have KaZaa or such on this comp and it was isolated last time, soooo, maybe I'll be ok anyway . Cheers Murray P

2003-05-03 05:35:00 | Murray: I see what you mean . Boy, that would have scared the living daylights out of me as well! I am still on dialup and started using Kerio when I networked my two PCs since the free version of Outpost does not support ICS whereas Kerio does . It is a good little program, highly customisable and does the job well . Perhaps you could try it and see if it suits your needs, if you have not already done so . Stumpey: Sorry for going a bit off-topic in your thread . :8}
