139858 2003-04-29 13:16:00 How are the drives connected?

IE, are both harddrives on the same cable.

And are the MP3s on a different drive to where the files are being copied?

If the answer is yes to both, then its a limitation of IDE because only one device on the cable can be accessed at a time so it has to switch between them and the MP3 drive isn't getting its turn often enough.

If enabling DMA (above) doesn't fix it, try increasing the buffer size in winamp (or whatever else you use).

139859 2003-04-30 01:24:00 Yeah, both the harddrives are on IDE 1, both CD's on IDE 2, the files get copied to C:/ the Music resides on the significantly larger (& safer) D:/

have enabled DMA on the CD (why did XP decide on PIO when DMA was available? and only on the bog standard CD & not the CDRW?) & now there isnt a problem, however, I may well increase tha cache size on winamp anyway. Just coz :-)

thanks for the help all.

It may have thought the drive may have (or has had) problems with DMA. Linux did it with my old 40x cdrom (yay for log files).

I have mine set at 10 seconds because I have enough RAM.

for some silly reason windows tends to put optical devices onto PIO without even bothering to try DMA.. its just a compatibility mode to cater for the large number of actual PIO-only drives out there at a guess...

This has been true for every version of windows I've used - I've always had to manual enable DMA on my optical drives.

Other things you can do to improve performance - look for a program called forceASPI and use it.. this installs an ASPI layer which can improve things for optical drives. Also check your mobo manufacturers' website for the latest busmaster IDE drivers and install those too

(apologies if the last two points have been mentioned already.. this forum software doesnt show all previous posts when replying, unlike the VBulletin based forums I'm used to)
