139848 2003-04-29 06:22:00 I have long had an issue with the fact that when copying files from a CD to hard Drive, ie. during software install, I get major stutter from the speakers. Basically making it torture to listen to music.

1. Id really just like to know the reason
2. but a solution would be handy too ;-)
Soundblaster Live 5.1 soundcard
AOpen 50x CD-ROM

Any ideas or further info needed feel free to ask.

139849 2003-04-29 06:43:00 Which do you need to do?

Copy between CD and HDD
or
Listen to music on your PC

Choose one only, as your PC is too busy to do both.

139850 2003-04-29 06:47:00 Haha, I was hoping that wouldnt be the case, sad that my once mighty PIII1000 is now too laboured by its tasks to afford me ample entertainment.

methinks I need to get rich & upgrade.

thanks for the prompt response ;-)

139851 2003-04-29 06:47:00 Sorry, not 100% clear on what you mean. If you are listening to something like MP3 on your hard drive while installing or starting another program, that's usually because the CPU and Hard drive are just too busy with the program instructions to keep the music up to date. Soz if I misunderstand too much. Pheonix (280)

139853 2003-04-29 06:57:00 firstly what OS ??

is DMA enabled for cdrom and hardrive?

if you have win9x do you have sb16 emulation in the device manager?

139855 2003-04-29 07:12:00 XP pro, DMA enabled on both hard Drives .

Seagate U5 30GB ATA/100 (Device 1 & 0 listed as Ultra DMA Mode 5, whatever that means)

Seagate 80GB Baracuda IV - Device 0 PIO mode, & Device 1 Multi-Word DMA Mode 2 (again, whatever that means, I sense a google research trip coming up)

Cant seem to see any info on the DMA status of the CD-ROM's

139856 2003-04-29 11:50:00 switch device 0 to "dma if available"

see here for an example:
www.g33kflat.skankyflat.net

that should fix your problem.

The difference between PIO and DMA - speaking on a very basic level, PIO uses your cpu to control the transfer of data between your drive and its controller and onto other areas of the system (ram, vmem, hdd's, ip traffic etc which are traditionally all smacked onto the pci bus which is tied up enough as it is), wheras if you enable DMA, a small "cpu" built into the cdrom itself controls the transfer of data between the drive and the data's destination points... this takes a load off your cpu and improves overall performance...

on a very basic level of course...

139857 2003-04-29 13:13:00 I just realized I wrote that out wrong .

XP pro, DMA enabled on both hard Drives .

Primary IDE channel (Device 1 & 0 listed as Ultra DMA Mode 5, whatever that means)
Seagate U5 30GB ATA/100
Seagate 80GB Baracuda IV

Secondary IDE Channel (Device 0 PIO mode, & Device 1 Multi-Word DMA Mode 2) again, whatever that means, I sense a google research trip coming up

Thats what I get for studying Philosophy while "Trouble Shooting"

I have selected DMA if available on both devices on my Secondary IDE Channel

So now its Device 0 Ultra DMA mode 2, & Device 1 Multi-Word DMA Mode 2

Attempted an install of a game that would have Crippled me poor Music experience & joy of joys, I have a consistent playback .

Thank you & goodnight :-)
