139779 2003-04-29 04:31:00 hi,

I have a dynalink 56k HCF modem. Approx 5yrs old.
It connect ok at about 40-45k. It opens pages ok then when u open further pages from the same domain it stalls - u see some initial activity (modem connection blinking or ZA indicator) then it jus stops - u click again - again u see some initial activity then jus stops and does nothing. this happens with links, internet bank (inside), opening PressF1 topics, webmail. Initial i mean like 2 secs then it jus stops.

Sometime it also does the same thing if u open like PressF1 forum, nzoom.com. it starts then jus stops and just stays there.... while the www.pcworld.co.nz does not even change one bit.

Other times, it connects then like 2 mins no acitivity (despite mouse cliking and keyboard inputs) and disconnects by itself. it also disconnect by itslf with no reason - be it if i was online 4hrs, 30mins, 5mins or 2 mins. Even when I am constantly surfing, downloading or icq-ing. This even happens in the middle of a webpage opening......

I have checked the settings by my Clear net ISP. I have also dropped the connection rate down to 38,400 - to no success.

139780 2003-04-29 04:47:00 When you changed the port speed to 38400 did you also add extra settings under Advanced.
Just changing the port speed will not slow your modem.
Depending on the Dynalink modem you will need to add either +MS=11 or +MS=V34 to extra settings.
The one that is incorrect will probably give modem not responding error so you can tell easily if you have used the correct setting.

I would also be suspicious of ZA it is quite possible it is blocking web sites.
With ZA open go to Firewall and Program Control and drag all the sliders to Low
If sites then start loading ok you can try putting them back to Med

ZA is the cause of many problems of this type and often causes more problems than it prevents.

139781 2003-04-29 05:07:00 It's an internal modem, and it probably uses the main memory for its buffers. Are you running short of memory? Try having a few fewer active programmes, and see if that helps. Graham L (2)

low on mem. nope. not at all. i have noticed these problems have consistently increased over the 12 months time,.

139783 2003-04-29 10:52:00 Deffinately don't agree with you there about ZA as I have never had any problems with it in several years. ( the free version not the pro) The only trouble I have is web sites that use adverts in a different way as I use the Hosts file. mikebartnz (21)
139784 2003-04-30 00:36:00 in case you've had no luck so far.

i can be several things. spyware is a cause of this. even if you use a firewall to block it. some are known to try to access so often they basicly clog up your internet, accessing so often nothing can go out or in. this is where useing a firewall can cause the net to grind to a halt. blocking the spyware causes the spyware to constantly try to connected out flooding your "connection" internally.

if its often dissconnecting then it could well be just poor phone lines.

> I have also dropped the connection rate down to 38,400

how did you do that? i suggest you string your modem so it connects useing v33 protocol rather han v90.

139786 2003-05-01 11:24:00 i am now getting a connection of 33600. i used the extra string "+ms=v34"

does seem a quite bit slower.

seem ok at the mo' , if anything i report back.

i don't think its the phonline as i use my laptop 56k 3Com builtin - no problems whatsoever.

ahh... no right now i think its having occasional inactivity. with the slower speed it does not be dumb forever but if u re-click it it works on 2nd time round.

should i try "+ms=v33"??
