140582 2003-05-01 07:13:00 I am in the proccess of connecting two computers with a cross connection(no hub). Hmm a bit confusing. Both my computers need a name I think.
I have loaded the drivers for my laptop(with a three com 10mbs pcmcia) & my desktop(10?100m Edimax Fast ethernet Adaptor) . Which are both using win98. But when I go to "find computer" it don't work.

140584 2003-05-01 07:54:00 Ooh!
Okay, lets get dirty :p
First things first - read the faq (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz)

Now
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network
Listed should be:
Client for Microsoft Networks
TCP/IP -> **NIC NAME**
File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks
there may be a few other things listed like Dialup Adapter, etc. Just ignore them. If these three things are not there, then:
click Add > Client > Microsoft > Client for Microsoft Networks for the MS Networking Client
click Add > Protocol > Microsoft > TCP/IP for the TCP/IP Adaptor
and click File and Print Sharing for File sharing

Now, go into the identification tab. Where it says Computer Name, provide a name for the computer, and where it says Workgroup, provide a workgroup name (note: the computer names have to be different, and the workgroup has to be the same across all computers)

Now, back to the Configuration tab:
Click on TCP/IP -> **NIC NAME** and then click properties
Click Specify an IP Address and put in an IP Address and subnet mask (usually 192.168.0.1 and 255.255.255.0 respectively)

On the second computer, do exactly the same thing, but change the ip addy from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.2

After this, you have the basics of a network setup. Click Start and then Run on one of the machines, then type "COMMAND" (without the quote marks). Now, type "PING 192.168.0.x" where x is the IP Address of the other machine. This will test the connectivity between the two machines. If you receive "reply (some jargon here)" then you have an active connection and all went well! :D
