140529 2003-05-01 03:35:00 Hello every one,

My dad has just instilled win XP on his computer two or three day ago

Is any one here on Press F1 using the built in Win XP firewall?????

If so what do you think????

Will it be ok for an ADSL Internet connection???
& Network (ICS) or does he need to reinstall Zone Alarm on his PC?????

Note: my dad & me are NOT newbes to computers; my dad has had his pc since DOS!! & I hade my own PC for 4+ years,
The only resign why I am asking this question is to check that the infor I know about it too see if iam right or wrong about this firewall & get people option etc.

140530 2003-05-01 03:51:00 The XP firewall is inward only.

If you use ADSL and you have an external router, then you would be better off to ensure NAT is enabled, then no firewall is needed for incoming, the router acts as a hardware firewall.

This is the method I use.

And I have used computers (and built them from scratch, with a soldering iron, circuit boards and components) since before the days of the DOS or CPM OS's however I don't see the need to state it every few posts

140531 2003-05-01 03:59:00 I wouldn't recommend using the built in firewall. If you're wanting a win32 based firewall I'd recommend getting Kerio Personal Firewall (www.kerio.com). Or if you've got a spare computer lying about set that up with Smoothwall (http:).

XP firewall can give you problems and you have no control over it.

140533 2003-05-01 04:10:00 Opps I forgot to say it is a internal modem :8} stu140103 (137)

Anyway WinXP's firewall is... well I can't say it's pretty bad, get yourself a firewall that monitors inward and outward as XP's firewall seemed to do nothing more than give me hassles. Especially when trying File Transfer, Video/Voice applications. It just wouldn't let me connect.

140535 2003-05-01 04:37:00 Considering you can get ZA personal edition for free, the only reason you might want to use the Win-XP firewall is if you are wanting to share your internet connection over a LAN and dont have decent proxy server software, as ICS doesnt like firewalls with outgoing control. 140536 2003-05-01 05:26:00 As its an internal Modem, I would use one of the free firewalls (Kerio, ZA etc). XP built in one can be a cow to configure if you need to allow access to specific resources I understand. You really do need some sort of firewall with an internal modem, as your system can be quite vulnerable.

If you are ever changing your Modem, the external ethernet connected routers are the way to go. Most give the hardware firewall function (as NAT provides) for incoming. I don't worry about outgoing.

I have always used Win XPs firewall on the dialup connection and also have Kerio firewall running. This computer is the gateway for a shared internet connection with a Win 98 computer. Apart from occasional problems with file transfer via instant messaging it has given me no trouble and I don't even know if the Win XP is the cause of them. Maybe I will disable it and see what happens. :-)

140538 2003-05-01 10:33:00 Hi

I really don't recommend that you turn on the firewall inside the Windows XP, it will causes you a big hassle sometimes, if you are sharing the hard drive and also sharing the printer, you must disable the firewall in order to use that . . . .

If you are using external router for your ADSL, it already have built in NAT, so it wouldn't be worry at all
