140505 2003-05-01 03:07:00 I have a home theatre receiver that has the ability to take optical or coaxial digital inputs for some of the channels.

Question: Is there a sound card available that is PCI only, (i.e. no cd player sized box that sits in the front of the pc like the SB audigy), and has either optical or coaxial OUT with at least 5.1 capability?

The only thing close I was able to find was the audigy, which has optical out on front panel - but this is useless as it is to be a permanent installation - plus I don't need all the other connections like firewire and huge headphone jacks etc...

Cheers,
Craig.

140506 2003-05-01 03:35:00 CreativeLabs soundcards suck.

Look at other options like the GameTheaterXP (has a breakout box so isnt what you want), the TurtleBeach Santa Cruz (difficult to get in NZ) or the Philips Edge Series(is a sole card and has spdif output, so sounds like what you are after)

140507 2003-05-01 05:48:00 I have a (cheap) PCI CM8738 based sound card which has an optional digital out (I have seen a similar card in Dick Smith which has the digital outputs supplied for about $87). Now I have not tried the digital out but I would expect that a digital input from a DVD rom should present itself at the digital out's ready for inputting into a receiver. Dolby Digital (160)
140508 2003-05-01 06:37:00 Cheers for those suggestions, however, can someone clarify: Are SPDIF and Optical one and the same, as I was under the impression that they were not...

Thanks,
Craig...

140509 2003-05-01 07:18:00 AFAIK, SPDIF (Sanyo/Panasonic Digital Interface?) is NOT optical. Its digital.

My mobo has SPDIF, and its definitely a wired interface, not an optical.

140510 2003-05-01 07:27:00 close, its sony/philips ;)

You are correct, it is not optical BUT optical (otherwise known as TOSLINK) is still digital. The comparitive term you are looking for is "co-axial" (just so that we arent comparing apples and oranges here)

So to cap off:
Two different transport formats:
* S/PDIF - Coaxial Digital (RCA connectors, like the yellow, red and white a/v connectors you find on most modern tv's, vcrs etc, except it has digital information transferring over it, not analogue)

*TOSLINK - Optical Digital

140511 2003-05-01 09:04:00 OK, my home theatre system has a coax digital input too, is this likely to be SPDIF??

Cheers,
Craig.
